And good luck on getting those PS2 owners to upgrade when they've already gone to the Wii and are wondering why they wouldn't be able to play their PS2 games on the PS3...

I've seen surveys to the effect that a higher PERCENTAGE of PS2 owners said they'd be brand-loyal and buy PS3 than the percentages of XBox and Gamecube fans that said they'd be brand-loyal to MS and Nintendo, respectively. PS2 just had the widest market.

The PS2 owners haven't bought a next-gen console en masse, yet.

PS2 owners can't play their PS3 games on Wii, either. ;)

Yeah...i want links to these surveys you claim you've seen. What was the size of the surveyed sample? WHEN was this survey administered? (pre-current gen?)

Definitely current gen. He only just made it up for gods sake

"Sony has come under fire for the delivery delays and high prices of its PlayStation 3, but "intensely" loyal existing PlayStation owners are more likely to upgrade to the console than defect to rival devices from Microsoft or Nintendo.

A survey of 1,725 consumers by ABI Research found that the percentage of PlayStation 2 owners showing interest in a next-generation console is lower than that of other console owners.

However, their "intensity of loyalty" to Sony products was higher when considering a next-generation purchase.

The poll suggested that 60 per cent of those who own a PlayStation 2 and are considering a new console are likely to buy a PlayStation 3.

This compared with 45 per cent of Xbox owners looking to buy an Xbox 360, and 46 per cent of GameCube owners looking to buy a Wii.

"We believe that Sony's much larger installed base, combined with higher loyalty among current generation owners, could translate into significant gains for Sony if it can convert these prospective owners," said ABI Research director Michael Wolf.

"Microsoft and Nintendo, while still seeing strong overall loyalty, do not enjoy the same intensity."

Nearly a fifth of survey respondents said they were likely to buy a games console in the coming year, compared with 28 per cent of active gamers.

"Not surprisingly, the interest in the new generation of consoles grows significantly among the already converted," said Wolf.

"While we think that the market of console owners will likely expand beyond its current bases, we believe that the market for the next one to two years will be driven by current console owners upgrading to the new generation.""

"A new survey has shown that despite efforts by video game console manufacturers to expand their reach to non-gamers, interest in next-generation consoles is largely centered among those who are current console gamers.

When ABI Research surveyed 1725 consumers about their interest in buying a new game console, a total of 18% said they were likely to buy one in the coming year, compared with 28% of active gamers. Interest rose even more dramatically when asking those who currently play on a console, with 42% of PlayStation 2 owners, 55% of Xbox owners and 54% of GameCube owners indicating they were likely to buy a new console.

"Not surprisingly, the interest in the new generation of consoles grows significantly among the already converted," says research director Michael Wolf. "While we think that the market of console owners will likely expand beyond its current bases, we believe that the market for the next 1 to 2 years will be driven by current console owners upgrading to the new generation."

While the overall percentage of PlayStation 2 owners showing interest in a next-generation console today was lower than that of other console owners, their intensity of loyalty to Sony products was higher when considering a next generation purchase. The research showed 60% of those who own a PS2 and are considering a new console likely to buy a PS3, which exceeded the 45% of Xbox owners looking to buy an Xbox 360 and 46% of GameCube owners looking to buy a Wii.

"We believe that Sony's much larger installed base combined with higher loyalty among current generation owners could translate into significant gains for them if they can, in fact, convert these prospective owners" said Wolf. "Microsoft and Nintendo, while still seeing strong overall loyalty, do not enjoy the same intensity."

The survey results are contained in ABI Research's research brief, "Video Game End-User Perceptions: Entering the Next Generation", which explores current video game players' preferences for platforms, explains game genres and identifies those who play video games today. It forms part of the Consumer Electronic Research Service, which also includes Research Reports, Research Briefs, Market Data, ABI Insights, and analyst inquiry support.

Methodology: data contained within this report is derived from a Web-based survey among a nationally-balanced and demographically-representative sample of 1,725 online consumers (age 18 and older). The consumer survey was conducted in October 2006. "

The problem with this survey (they are the same one just the first one is reporting the results of the second url) is that it was done in October 2006, before the PS3 and Wii started selling.  When they looked at the actual price tag of the PS3, the intensity died a bit.

"their interest in buying a new game console, a total of 18% said they were likely to buy one in the coming year, compared with 28% of active gamers. Interest rose even more dramatically when asking those who currently play on a console, with 42% of PlayStation 2 owners, 55% of Xbox owners and 54% of GameCube owners indicating they were likely to buy a new console."

If the numbers had panned out, in 2007, 42% of PS2 owners should have bought a PS3, or about 42M.  Didn't happen.  It could be argued that 'currently play' gamers were, say, only half as many, thus 21% were 'currently playing gamers'.  That would be around 21M PS3 in 2007.  Not there either.

A new survey is needed.  One that finds out what price the PS3 needs to be before a PS2 owner will buy it.  And checks to see how many PS2 buyers already have a X360 or a Wii.

'we believe that the market for the next 1 to 2 years will be driven by current console owners upgrading to the new generation.'

I suppose it was, somewhat.  But the PS2 in the last 2 years has outsold the PS3.  And the X360 and Wii have (combined) outsold Sony's combined PS2/3.   Perhaps the Xbox and Gamecube owner had more reasons to want to upgrade more than the PS2ers.

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.

Uncharted does have a longer story and much more diverse gameplay than Gears of War.

Both are around 10 hours in single player mode, but Gears of War has far more replay value because of the online multiplayer. Uncharted is a great game, but once you've finished it there's not a lot of reason to go back and play it again.

Your assuming of course that most 360 owners have the ability to play online

They all do. Whether they choose to or not is another matter. You can't choose to play Uncharted online either way, so that argument has no weight at all.

this was said about the sega saturn as well, yes it was the better system, yet it still failed. consumers make or break an item regardless of how good it might be

Hopefully the next GTA will be a PS3 exclusive.

You'd be insane to think so. It would never happen, and if a console exclusivity for a new GTA ever did happen, why wouldn't it go over to the 360 instead?

I'm starting to think that the recent weeks sales of the PS3 below the 360 could possibly be the starting signs that PS3 sales are slowing down. It's had it's surge of sales since launch and now they're stabilising. The PS3 will not be catching the 360 anytime soon.

Wii sales are also slowing down. 90 k in US?! That must be a sign that it doesn't have any appeal any more. I will quote you once the PS3 price falls to $299.

Wii shortages.

Pricedrop won't be until next year if they look at it from a business perspective. If they want to satiate ppl like urself then yes they will drop it.

Don't try and convince us the PS3 has the better games, go convince the people not buying one. Yeesh.

All I see are people trying to build a sense of communal support for their hopes and aspirations for their console of choice. People, this is not healthy nor productive, opinions are one thing but this is getting kind of scary.

Aren't you one of the people not buying one?

Then may I suggest trying something more productive than pathetic PR spinning? This is about as bad as when the PS3 first came out and all Sony fans could talk about was how the PS4 would set everything right.
