Forums - Nintendo - Holiday 2008: The Absence of Core Titles

Do you think Nintendo care that some core titles are delayed or not? With or without them the Wii will probably still being sold out this holiday season.

I think this would have been one of the major considerations ...

Nintendo (quite possibly) saw the line-up of third party titles and the massive sales of the Wii and thought that they really didn't need to add anything to push Wii sales at Christmas; after all, the Wii has seen holiday season like sales through out the year and will likely be sold out (regardless) for the entire Christmas season.

Personally, I do think it is far more likely that the absence of certain titles from their line-up this year is more likely caused by a delayed game than Nintendo no longer being interested in those gamers; this delay could have been caused by business decisions, design issues, or (as I suggested) a move towards the Wii MotionPlus add-on.

Ah in the end it will be a good thing, after the Holiday season core gamers get some hopefully awesome Wiimotionplus add on games and that will raise the sales of the Wii in the quite after Holiday season period..

you could be right, and i kinda hope you are cause motion plus makes my mouth water.

however, mario kart still sold out, wii fit still sold out. i'm thinking they may have delayed whatever would have filled out this holiday to ensure that third party (which has a pretty good line up this holiday) has a chance to sell.

imagine mario kart and wii fit (in obtainable quantities), animal crossing, wii music AND kid icarus all out this holiday. third party wouldn't have a chance and it would only serve to reenforce the "third party can't sell on the wii" myth.

Can't really say that you discovered america or anything the like with your post, but of course someof it is valid, some is speculation, and some of it seems very, very far fetched.

You have to hand it to Nintendo that during the first 1,5 years of Wiis life cycle, they managed to dish out all the games that are main sereis titles (SMG, Zelda, MK, SSBB) which is pretty unprecedented. I really would think that beyond the urge to have their future games use the motionplus, they really just would'nt have too many games that would appeal to everyone like the ones written above, that would be ready to dish out for this holiday season.

Besides, with Nintendo practically hammering 3rd party sales, it would be a good thing to let them have a bit of space during the holiday season. If by any chance the lineup for this year doesn't result in at least 3-4 3rd party million sellers, there will be a problem imo.

I agree with you, and my initial post is more of a stream of thought then my true expectations to what Nintendo has done. There are actually several reasons this hole in games could have occured at this holiday season; the Wii is probably going to be sold out regardless (and Nintendo is going to shatter profit expectations) and Nintendo could delay games to drive sales in non-holiday months, they could be purposefully making an opportunity for third party publishers to destroy claims that the Wii is bad for third party games, and there are only a few big titles that haven't been released and it is unlikely that many big titles would be ready to be released this holiday season (and they could have been delayed.

Nintendo's games are currently selling very well.
Nintendo values their software and allows them to form legs.
By releasing too many of their big games in a short period of time would mean that some of these games would start to cannibalize the others sales.
Nintendo is just spacing out their titles to avoid this.
The whole thing about third parties being allowed to sell more is rubbish. The myth about third parties are required to be successful should have been debunked by now.

Prediction:
Disney will make KH3 with Nintendo.Yes,KH3 will be a Disney/Nintendo crossover.

Interesting read. I rather have "core" stuff in a year's time with Motionplus than to have stuff this christmas without it.

On a side note; I hate the mentality that hardcore games need headshots, big breasts, adult themes and blood to be hardcore. What most forget oh too often is that E3 had alot of 3rd party emphasis on the line-up. I don't know about you guys but I might just try Call of Duty: World at War and Star Wars: The Clone Wars so it's not all about "Nintendo titles selling on Nintendo systems."

Pixel Art can be fun.

I think the theory of Motion Plus could be dead on.

Though I originally thought Nintendo might be stepping back to let third parties have some success and get more support, I also realize that doesn't really fit with Nintendo's way of doing things.

I do plan on picking up quite a few third party titles this year, and hope that others do quite a bit of that as well. The lack of a brand new holiday "core" title made by Nintendo (yes, i know AC is coming, I just don't find it to be core, though a lot of other "Core" gamers seem to like it) may actually help third party efforts on the Wii shine, and even though it wasn't planned by Nintendo could be very good for them in the long run.

Wii isn't a hardcore console. it is a casual...even too some extent childish console. If you wanted hardcore, you should have gotten a PS3 or xbox 360

Going by the definition of that Wii is a console that plays for short periods of time and PS360 are cnosoles that play long periods of time.  First of all that doesn't make sense considering I'm sure you could leave all 3 on for more than 24 hrs(except 360 might Red Ring).  So its apparent you have no idea what the definition of hardcore and casual is.

Secondly content on each consoles doesn't define it as hardcore or casual.  Technically you can't classify a console as hardcore or casual because the definitions behind them don't work with the features of hardware.  Thirdly its obvious you are a silly fanboy with no valid opinions whatsoever and I'm glad I could point that out to you.  Now watch me perform a magic trick as I make this pencil disappear and look in my sig.  That'll be all.

I think Animal Crossing is core in that, it's a title that Nintendo fans know well.
