Forums - Sony - Why do sony still use disks

I recently descovered that you'll be able to install your entire game onto your xbox360 to improve loading times dramatically. But seeing as the ps3 uses core technologie and has an upgradable hard drive wouldn't it seem obvious to just download games onto the ps3 as well, instead of using disks.

Because I don't want to install a potentially 50 gb game onto my ps3s HDD and multiple 20gb games.

Piracy, and most games use quite alot of HDD space anyway.

You don't really need alot of the less used files to be put on the HDD, or the smaller ones, also the PS3 doesn't suffer from a overly loud Optical drive.

Also with games like GT5p they did this and it was still cheaper to get it from internet shops.

I don't understand the appeal of filling up a hard drive when you've already got the thing on disc. I'd much rather just play off the disc, load times don't bother me but sitting there installing an entire game collection onto a hard drive definitely would.

It doesn't take that long to install a game on the 360. Microsoft said that Devil May Cry 4 took roughly 10 min to install on the hard drive.

Because most people only have 20-80GB HDDs, so you would only be able to install a few games at best, if you did not use any discs

Because a disc costs 1.5$ to make and has 50Gb. On a normal DSL line a 25Gb Bluray game takes hours to download and HDs that fit more than 10 games are still expensive (and not available for 360).

If the 360 has such a better method, just buy one

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

and they could be like me, who trusts their own ability to maintain discs rather than a hard drive that could become corrupted etc. I know you could always redownload, but my 1.5mb 25gb cap doesn't permit me the luxury of re-downloading upto 50gb sized games.

That's the only reason why I always have and always will buy the disc version of games if I can.

Because without increasing the hd size, and thus cost, only 2 PS3 games could be installed on an 80gb hard drive.

Fact is, only those with an Elite 360 will get any advantage, 20gb is nothing, even 60 is pretty insignificant for installing full games
