Forums - Sony - Witness to a PS3 non-purchase

On Monday I went to EB to get a copy of the Darkness, only to find out the game comes out the next day.

While I was waiting in line to ask the store clerks about it, this guy had a PS3 box handed to him and I was curious to check out if he seemed like someone who plays games (if that is possible to spot) and so he put the console down and asked the guy how much it comes up to. This is how the conversation went from there:

'600$'

'650$ with tax?'

'Yeah pretty much'

Reaches and takes out his wallet.

'And what game does this come with?'

'It doesn't come with any games.'

'No games with it?'

'No'

'Alright...' waits a little 'Well I'll be back later in the week and get it.'

'Ok...'

'I'll definitely be back later.' Walks off.

As you can see it was a pretty weird situation. The guy literally changed his mind on the spot even tough he knew it was 600 dollars before, he hesitated and decided not to get the PS3. I was thinking of jumping in at that point and asking him if he has an HDTV. If he answered yes, I was gonna tell him the PS3 has an HD DVD player in it too, as it didn't seem he knew much about it, but I held back.

I mean the store clerk should have done that if he was smarter or more dedicated to selling it, since the guy was literally on the fence and he definitely looked like he was going to get it before changing his mind.

Anyway the story is just an anecdote nothing more, but it was very interesting for me cause I was witnessing the whole convo, standing there next to the guy.

The crazy thing about that store is it seem like the guy would have bought a PS3 if it came with a game.... Kinda like with the Wii hmmm......

The ps3 brings a movie

Ummm..... Interesting experience, I guess. I was expecting to hear something about the clerk telling the person not to get it...

Poor salesmanship by the seller if the dialogue went exactly as you said. Its strange that he didnt know that it was 600 and that it came with a game. I guess he was a casual PS2 gamer.
600 dollars is a lot come to think of it.

I ABSOLUTELY would have told him all about the Blu-Ray player. It's a definite selling point for adults. You're right, that's precisely what that clerk should  have done.

EB/Gamestop employees get no incentives to sell consoles, so it doesn't matter to them.

That happens a lot according to people and I would be really pissed if that happened with me or around me. If I heard a clerk trying to convince someone to get a 360 instead of a PS3 I would literally do everything in my argumentative power to point out how good a deal the PS3 is and I'm sure I would out argue the average EB clerk lol
