BOTH games are beautiful, both games are going to play well with high res good physics lighting whatever whatever.
but KILLZONE 2 does it all slightly better for me, but i expect the game to llok better with how long it has been in development

Killzone 2 ...gear is crap and played it on 360 didnt like it overrated crap never will buy a gear 2
In light of recent Killzone 2 videos and screens, I'd have to say that Killzone 2 soundly beats Gears 2 in animations and particle effects, Killzone 2 beats Gears 2 in lighting and AA (Gears 2 still looks like it has no AA, just like Gears 1, Killzone 2 has 4x Quincunx AA). They are both comparable in polygon counts (though it's hard to determine scale at this point), and Gears wins in textures, though barely.
To those saying that Gears 2 has better character models, if you look closely you'll see that most of the detail on the character models comes from fancy texture work, and that the polygonal detail is on par with the character models from Killzone 2.
For example, clasps, nuts, bolts, etc. on Gears of War's character models are all done via texturing, while the Helghast in Killzone 2 wear nothing but gray cloth, which isn't conducive to such details, though what clasps and buckles are there are fully 3D.

Awesome screenshots of KZ2. KZ2 will be game of the year for 2009.
I don't think you can ever change any ones opinion about what games looks best, to me Gears2 looks plain, just like all the unreal engine games, the engine is old and you can see that, they think they can just throw fancy textures all over the place and it makes their game look good, but it does not look good. KZ2 looks like a warzone and you get great immersion from it, Gears 2 just looks like people are placed in a level and go at it, there is nothing special about it.
Of course this is just my opinion.

Also, Killzone's textures look great in some areas (like the ground in the shots below). They're probably just still polishing them up in certain areas. Hell, just look at shots from last year's E3 and you'll see how horrible the textures were then. And some shots to show off the lighting:
And some gifs:

I agree with makingmusic, for me KZ2 is the winner, but still I will buy a 360 to play gears 2, I found a used one for $260.

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E
Killzone 2 is IMO easily the better and more impressive looking game, I also think Gears of War 2 will again put the user in IMO too small environments to actually freely move around in most of the time (making it technically less impressive). Gears 2 looks good though and seems to stress the 360 to the max of what is possible to do on this system.
