Forums - General - Rafael Nadal is now the world's number 1 male tennis player

Yup. That's right.

If my calculations are correct (which they usually are conserning Tennis), it's now certain.

The only question is whether it will be on the 4th, 11th or 18th August.

If he wins or comes to the final in the current ATP tournament, it will be on the 4th, if he loses the semi-final, it's on the 11th, if he loses the match he's playing right now, it's on the 18th.

So it's done. Roger Federer is down to second, after 235-238 consecutive weeks at 1st place. That's a record.

He needs 50 more to become the one with most weeks at nr 1, beating Sampras. Federer is currently at 4th.

Is Federer out of the ATP tournament then? I haven't been keeping up.

Great! Nothing but respect for Nadal he has been phenomenal this year!

Its been a great summer for Spain winning Euro 2008, Nadal winning Wimbledon, Carlos Sastre winning the Tour De France and now Nadal no.1 Spain own summer in sports this year.

Well one day as they were throwing paper balls at me, i stabbed one of the fat bullys in the eye with a pencil and used his body to manuever through the others as i pelted rocks at them one by one, soon after i threw each and every one of their bodies off a building, and put their heads on staffs, to show the world.

Hail Federer anyway
U.S open Roger last hope?

I Still think Federer is better Technically

He is better, all other things being equal. The problem is that he's turning 27, while Nadal just turned 22. Federer's on the down-slope of his career, while Rafa's in his prime.

Who cares. Womens tennis is where it is at.

I'm still sad Justine Henin retired. She had so much tennis left in her.

Not at all. Rather the opposite.

You see, the ATP tennis rankings a rolling 12 month streak.

Roger Fedrer won U.S open last year. This means, that he can only lose points here now.

Nadal, got very little points. He is almost guaranteed to increase.

Federer is also seeded 2. now. Against Djokovic, who has beat Federer twice this year.

Nadal won his match yesterday. He's now playing Djokovic.

The points by the 18th will be as follows:

Nadal (with win in this tournament) - 6800 points. With lose in final, 6650 points, with lose in semi, 6525 points.

Federer: 6170 points

Djokovic (with win in this tournament) - 5550 points. With lose in Final, 5400 points, with lose in Semi, 5275 points

This means that Federer needs to catch in a lot of points.

There are 3 major tournaments left. If he wins all of them, he gains 475 points. That's not going to be enough to catch Nadal, as he is likely to also improve - and probably even by more.

So by the end of 08, Nadal is nr 1.

The question is - who will be number 2?

If Djokovic beats Roger in the U.S Open Semi-Final, and loses to Nadal in the final, he will be at the same score. Roger, will be at 5620 points.

If you now subtract the scores of the 2 remaining tournaments.

Djokovic is at 5320 points.

Federer is at 5195 points.

This means Federer needs to beat Djokovic in the Semi in both the remaining tournaments.

If Djokovic loses today though, he needs to beat Federer both times.

Fed Express will win the US Open and the Swiss master will regain his number one ranking once again.
