Forums - Gaming - Could Phantasy Star Portable sales lead the way for Phantasy Star V?

Immense 'Phantasy Star Portable' (PSP)'s sales leading to development of 'Phantasy Star V' ?
Very highly unlikely.

What Japanese's gamers are buying is an 'Online Multiplayer and Portable JRPG' in the same vein that 'Monster Hunter Freedom 2', not 'Phantasy Star'...
A single player RPG, even on a handheld, would fail to reach that market, just like the '2D platformer': 'Wario Land: Shake It!' failed to reach the audience of the 'party game': 'Wario Ware: Smooth Moves'.
Plus, it is quite a saturated market already.

Not that I wouldn't like a traditional 'Phantasy Star', but from a business point of view, it does not make much sense.
Now Sega does not have an history of wise business move, so it may not be completely impossible.

Are you saying Phantasy Star V wouldn't sell very well?

No. I say that it would do completely different numbers than what 'Phantasy Star Portable' is currently doing (different market), and that you can't base the business decision of developping 'Phantasy Star V' on those sales.

A PSV would have to be a full release on next gen HD consoles as well to mark its return and making that would cost A LOT of money.
