Forums - Gaming - Carmack (Rage): 360 is a superior piece of hardware.

By contrast, all of Rage's content will fit onto just one of the high-capacity Blu-Ray discs used by the PlayStation 3. However, Carmack shut down many Sony loyalists' blooming braggadocio by saying that while the Blu-Ray disc is clearly his preferred medium, the 360 is a superior piece of hardware for developers.

Guess Carmack has had a lot to say today.

So, what he's really saying is that it's easier to make games on the 360, it just has a whole mess of shortcommings and encourages developers to release sub-par versions of their games? Really, don't tell me that the 360 is the better machine, Mr. Carmack, while telling me at the same time that your games will not be superior on that machine.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

Textures are just one aspect, you have lighting - shaders - AA - Aniso filtering - frame rates - resolution - shadows.

A clear advantage on any one of those is possible for the Xbox360, which would certainly make the texture resolution issue moot at least. Many multiplatform games show a clear advantage for some of these different aspects favouring the Xbox360.

Tease.

The architectures for both consoles are completely different. If you take advantage of PS3 hardware you can get it to look significantly better than the 360 version. His words. However, in order to take advantage of PS3 hardware, it will require significant investments.

The man doesn't hate PS3, he just wants people to know, when developing multiplatform, its the hardest to juice. Over time this will become less of a problem as Sony is already developing coding methodologies such as the Edge toolkit. Good way to flame though!

Console Agnostic since 2001.

The success of the PS2 with developers was due to consumer acceptance, not due to developers liking the platform. Sony must have gotten the wrong idea from their PS2 success, making another unlikable architecture on the PS3...

This time, the customers aren't here to force developers to take advantage of it. Of course, some developers are taking advantage of it, especially first party, it just won't be the rule like it was with the PS2.

Cell is becoming easier to us as time goes by.  Developer's are using the newly revised Edge Toolkit along with other peices of tech that are bridging the game between the foreign architecture and ease of use.

Developer's don't hate it as much people make it out.  For example Mirror's Edge and Burnout Paradise both use PS3 as lead plat.

@talkingparrot: Isn't Mirror's Edge using UE3?

Don't know about Burnout though.

and Dead Space

True, X360 is easier to develop for. Now, will we see an interesting game from Carmack on the X360? no. I don't think that we will see it on the PS3 either.

He's a technologist - and a damn good one at that, he's been in the industry too long to be kidding around too...

I wonder what he understood to come to that conclusion.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.
