Well as far as I know Carmack is pushing new tech with this engine (Called megatexture), with the purpose of making more realistics enviroments, probably thats why he said it (Two dvds with tons of huge textures is not wnough for him), the interesting part will be how big is the difference...

"The demonstration with which the new game engine was shown had 20 GB of texture data (using a more advanced MegaTexture approach using textures with up to 128000x128000 pixel resolution) and a completely dynamically changeable world."

Edit: Some people need to understand that this case in particular is due to the Tech of the new engine, and this is only the wet dream of Carmack, he want to put the Tech5 as a new and competitive engine (Like UTE or CryEngine2), so far this is the only game using it, and probably there is not going to be many of them... like Tech4 (Doom4,Quake4 and Prey)... is a hit to the 360 yes, but is not a big hit...

apearently Doom4 (just announced)will be on the same engine as rage with modification to improve the graphics will lowering the FPS from 60 to 30.

Does that eman that doom 4 also will be on 2 disks on 360?

So, two games from IDSoftware??? on more than one DVD??? really I can´t how this is a big hit for the 360

it's not a big hit to 360 at all,,,,PS3 lost exclusivity which were big but this is not a big hit ,,,it just shows that blu ray going forward is relevant unlike what most people(atleast on here) claim.

this is not PS3 vs. 360 thing in my view,,,it just shows the need for bluray in near future(not saying PS3,but bluray as a liable medium for future)

Not really, is relevant to this aproach (royalty fees), but in general, he never said that spliting should be tech issue, is more a money issue...

I imagine no one would like 4 disks for a shooting game.you might disagree but general public if given the choice, would choose one disk over 4 .

I haven't heard of this one until this thread. Maybe Mr. Carmack has gone public in an attempt to force Microsoft's hand on the multi-disc royalty issue.... Or, maybe he even went to Microsoft and he threatened to go nuclear. MS maybe called his bluff. Who knows. Business can be ugly...

I hate trolls.

But thats just preferences, FFVII came on 3 disc, and still was a success, this end up on personal choice...

Kn I think he wants the media to blow up so MS would be forced to allow him to put the game on more than 2 disks.Casue in this genre MS doesnot allow more than 2 disks unlike RPG.his new  engine is 20 GB alone(for this game and Doom 4)so he needs to do this once so that MS would not cause problems for doom 4 either in near future.

Or maybe just maybe the best explention is the simplest one.

Having more of something you need can be very usefull.

Hahaha, sounds like you guys have no idea who John Carmack is. He is very close to Microsoft and was even consulted by Microsoft on various issues with the original Xbox.

Just because he doesn't like the PS3 architecture doesn't make him a Microsoft stooge. For PC game development Carmack has consistently backed OpenGL over Microsoft's Direct3D. He's also been a big supporter of both Linux and Mac game development.

Carmack has been speaking openly about game development for more than a decade, and he's one of the most unbiased out there.

no matter how anyone spins this ,it just shows that blu-ray is infact needed going forward.Despite lots of poeple bashing it for not being  neccessary.imagine 3more years from now,,,Size of games will be huge ,therfore making  bluray a very good medium choice for future.

At some point Blu Ray will be needed, but not yet. The problem right now is one of royalty fees, not technical limitations. I understand Microsoft doesn't want developers shipping on multiple DVDs, but if the alternative is allowing the 360 to receive inferior versions of multiplatform games that's even worse. I think Microsoft will concede, but if they don't, I'll be looking much more seriously at the PS3 for multiplatorm games.

It took forever for DVD-ROM to fully replace CD-ROM in gaming PCs. I expect the Blu Ray transition will be just as slow. The new 4x Blu Ray drives should be excellent for gaming, though.

According to Carmack, the royalty fees to include a third disc in the Xbox 360 version would be so high that it simply isn't a feasible solution, with the programmer hoping for Microsoft to make a concession. He stressed that the issue is merely a storage problem and has nothing to do with the power of the Xbox 360 hardware.

Uh, lets think about that. What he is saying is that he hopes MS will make a concession and with a developer of this talent yea it's going to happen.
