Side question ...
Looking at the "Core" gamers Nintendo actually lost should Nintendo actually want to win these gamers back?
I'm not talking about the people who are simply not interested in what the Wii provides at the moment ... I'm refering to the gamers who determine the value of a console is measured in its technical specifications, the value of a game is how "Mature" its content is, and agressively attack anything which they feel takes away from the "Purity" or "Artistic Merit" of gaming. In the process of pleasing these gamers (as Sony and Microsoft have tried to do) you can alienate a large portion of the gaming market while taking massive corporate losses and pusing the development costs of your games to a level where it becomes difficult to turn a profit on them.
This population of "Snob-core" gamers, who are heavily represented on the internet, really only make up (roughly) 5% of all system and game sales which means that it would be nearly impossible for a console manufacturer to survive on these gamers alone; appealing to these gamers tastes at the expense of larger demographics is not a good strategy for a company or the industry as a whole.
Now, as a side note, I do thing Nintendo should appeal more to "Core" gamers by releasing information about pending game releases about 6 to 9 months before these games will be released; and they should put as much effort into producing new game series that will appeal to these gamers as they seem to have put into researching and developing products that appeal to "Casual" gamers. I also think it might be worthwhile for Nintendo to take some of their (currently massive) profits and reinvest into software development by buying a few (smaller) development studios that cater to "Core" gamers.
