America's Army? Yeah, I remember that one. An US military recruitment piece IIRC. I never got around to trying that back in the day, and I'll probably try it when I visit my bro (he's got my gaming rig).
Even if the gameplay is more frustrating/difficult etc. I don't mind. What most FPS games lack is a sense of vulnerability: When i can just pop a pill and be 100% in moments, or duck behind a rock and recover from a headshot would I just took, or just be able to absorb a clip of explosive bullets at point-blank range without even flinching, the atmosphere of the game suffers quite a bit IMO. The worst example of this is Bioshock, where (for most of the game) dying is rendered absolutely meaningless and pretty much wrecks the mood of the game - nothing can really kill you, so why do I even bother fighting them?
Admittedly, when realism in combat is taken to an extreme, it can be quite a buzzkiller and probably won't work for most people. But a FPS (even a sci-fi one) that aims for it would certainly stand out from the gray mass of modern shooter drek.
