Forums - Sales - EA CEO: We should have bet on the Wii

@ Rol )

and what makes you think the dozens of cheap games didn't meet or exceed their respective sales expectations? because we didn't get reports like with No More Heroes or Ôkami ?

So this thread implies that the ps2 gen should never have ended because there were more profits and dev costs were lower right? I blame M$ lol!

Nope, it's the admission of the EA CEO that they did not properly allocate development resources because they failed to recognize the market leader.

the wii - will reach 50% Marketshare- maybe 60% but that imo is the most it'll go.

that said you have a new ip you want to market to, do you

1- go HD multiconsole with the expense increase?

2- go wii with exclusive rights, ~1/3rd less cost and an equal number of consoles avail.

that is the question you need to ask, which console would be a "safer" bet.

as we can see from the sales of ALL video games, the more effort you put in, the better your chance of it being a success...

personally if i was taking that bet i'd do a great wii game...lower cost, about the same % of gamers on each system, and you have that "exclusivity" mystique to help....

Depends on the type of game. So with a game like Street Fighter 4, you'll go wii exclusive even with 60% market share?

I actually wasn't referring to the OP. It was the trend of the subsequent posts.

You gotta admit though, it really all depends on the kind of game being developed. No one can argue that activision is extremely happy with their "gamble" on PS360 with COD4 after 10 mil copies. Does anyone really think that a wii version of that game could've generated more profit than just the 360 version by itself?

Yes, because COD5 is coming to the Wii.

Yes, because COD5 is coming to the Wii.

yes but COD5 is developed by Treyarch and will suck as much as CoD3 . We will see which platforms are supported by the next Infinity Wards game.

Heard some people arguing over third party sales on the Wii, since nobody cares about my thread I firgured I'd post some of those stats here.

July 19th saw about 900k in third party software for Wii. 1.25 million on 360 and PS3 was 850k

Wii and 360 go back and forth in third party totals, slightly edging it over to 360 but not significant enough to cover extra development costs associated with HD graphics.

All three consoles are seeing very high third party totals.

Wii has a deceptively low percentage because of WiiSports, WiiPlay, WiiFit and WiiZapper/Zelda.

Another statistical trait is that Wii has less big sellers but has a very strong baseline due to the light front end.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

But in practicality? Do you think the wii can generate more profit than a PS3/360/PC combo for a game that doesn't even utilize motion controls?

When you watch the wii adverts, you see people "swinging their arms" to control the game. Any game that doesn't fit this ideal won't sit well with the "masses" who made their purchase based on the wii's mass appeal due to the above. It would sell mostly to the nindendocore who are arguably less than the PS360 core. The profit doesn't look that great anymore.

Yeah but as far as I have seen the third party sales are predominantly

Party games like Carnival, Raving Rabbids,
Music games like Guitar Hero, Rock Band
and some sport games.

So if EA comes to the same conclusion and we all know how high EA values quality in games, the more hardcore Wii owners won't be very happy with stronger EA support.
