Forums - Sony - Using PS3 for BR

Hi,

I do not own a PS3 but am curious about your opinion regarding its reliability as a BR player.  I'll explain, it's been advised that I do not use the 360 as a primary DVD player because it may wear out the drive prematurely.  The same concerns are valid with Wii (I don't think I'm allowed to go any further with this).

My question is, do any of you worry about shortening the life of your console due to over using its BR capabilities?

Why would a blu-ray drive get worn out by playing....blu-ray discs....?

Defeats the object no?

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

HELL no. ps3 is the best BD player and in my opinion the best game console out there... so ima ware my shit down anyway u put it LOL.

plus if i can buy 4 xboxs (stupid RROD thats why i love sony much better hardware) i can buy another ps3 if it happens. ive had my ps3 since launch and it has NEVER had any problems. (over 20 games and 100 blu-rays)
I think this is the safest system to play both movies and games on.

Well, after seeing people with dead PS2 and XBox drives that used their system to play movies also, I never recommend it. Maybe it will be fine, but they are expensive to replace if they break. I don't want both my console and my movie player to be down at the same time.

I give this thread a 9.7.

Thank god for the disable signatures option.

The same reason why early PS2s died because of over using its DVD playback feature.  My question is valid.

Yes, but standalone Blu-Ray players are still too expensive to purchase.

No, the Blu-ray drive in the PS3 won't get worn out by playing BD movies. Games are much more stressfull than films for the reader.

I am under the impression that Blu-ray films require just a 1* reader, whereas the PS3's reader is a 2*. I could be talking out of my arse, but, that, to me, looks like the PS3 has an easy ride when reading BD movies.

I think the first DVD drives (for example those used in PS2) had problems with long use and the lens position changed. Unreadable disc errors were the most common PS2 problems. But I think much has changed since then and the basic functionality of optical drives is much advanced, so I cannot see this as a big problem with the PS3. (I base this on the fact that there is not much complaining about dying BluRay drives after 18months of existance.)
