Forums - Sony - An update on the Blu-ray/DVD war.

This is a critical holiday season for Blu-Ray.

There is no more HD-DVD to confuse consumers. Expect all the big electronics stores to start pimping Blu-Ray as the must-have electronics item for this Christmas. Hopefully prices for players come down to something more reasonable to the average consumer by then. ($200)

In order for them to really take off they should lower the price for each movie to roughly DVD prices... Blu Ray movies are still too expensive here in Europe (~$50 for a new release)

 wow really? damn they are 23 dollars here in the USA. and most DVDs are 19.99 so its a big fat duh on which format im buying shit for.

Fox movies are 27.99 tho... so i dont buy them lol.

That's not the only problem, when they are sold next to the DVD releases that are half the price then you might as well include a "Sucker" sticker for people that will buy the BR relases to stick it on their forehead.

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

We should see stand-alone player prices down to $200 by the end of 2009, after that it will take another 5 years or so in order for the patents to run out, meaning that once manufacturers don't have to pay intellectual prop fees, the price of the players will be lower.

Also, by about 2013 we'll have OLED TVs around, which will supposedly* cost around 60-70% of what a similar LCD HDTV would cost so look out for OLED TVs making a big thing out of high def. They'll not only give brighter picture colors, deeper blacks, but delivrer great definition, use less electricity, be as thin as a MacbookAir, and will be a bit cheaper than similar LCD TVs. Better, cheaper HDTV means more interest in Blu-ray, but just give OLED a few years to get out there as the technology is just getting out there.

I agree with lowering the prices of the Blu-Ray disc. I don't buy many Blu-Ray movies unless they are on sale. $29.99-$39.99 for new releases is a little much if you ask me. DVD on the other hand are $14.99-$24.99 for new releases.

If Blu-Ray movies had similar prices as DVDs for new releases I would purchase way more of them.

First of all, is that percentage based on revenue or unit sales?

Second, does that 8% statistic refer to the same thing as the statistics in this thread? If so, that's quite misleading. They're taking the top selling Blu-Ray movies and calculating the percentages of those movies. I don't think I have to explain why those statistics are misleading...

@dno where do you play 19.99 for dvds (in the usa), out side of seasons or colleters sets i havent paid more than 9.95 for dvd, and good blueray movies are 29.99, ones that are remastered.

most expesive dvd collection i own complete x files, 61 dvds, 250 dollars

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=br_nf_4_more?ie=UTF8&field-releasedate=8y-14y&node=404276&rank=salesrank&pf_rd_p=417259501&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=404332&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0H0Q3R7D52GYEYNZP0GF

that is new DVDs coming out in august and as you can see most are 19.99 the single movies is what you look at 19.99 a pop. and this is amazon this is a very good cheap site. i wish i could find a new movie for 9.99 on DVD but sadly without a sale its just not out there.

look at Nim's Island (Widescreen Edition) Single DVD and so on.

Now for blu-rays

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=br_nf_3_more?ie=UTF8&field-releasedate=8y-14y&node=16295751&rank=salesrank&pf_rd_p=325297301&pf_rd_s=center-11&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=193640011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0GTQAWA2HRN4GT43YPGD

no single blu-ray (movie) is higher then 27.99 like i said. i have never seen a single movie for 29.99 and i have about 100 blu-rays.

when they 1st came out sure but now the highest single movie is 27.99.

Now sure u can go to best buy and get ripped off (they cahrge 5-10 more bucks for the same thing) or you can shop smart and find blu-rays for 5 dollars more then DVDs of the same movie.

again these links are random movies coming out in august just to give peeps an "idea" of prices and what not.

 if more people are buying new releases on Blu-ray and less people are buying them on DVD then its not misleading.... people are buying BD thats what its about. DVD been out forever of you have to only count NEW releases or it makes no sense. Its about BD GROWTH over last year which was what 200%?

Thats what you should be taking from this. BD will be the next media thats pretty much a given at this point.

Oh, so now its a war between Blu-Ray and DVD? I swear you people can't be happy unless you're convinced you're competiting against something.

go check bestbuy, circuit city or any other retailer? That's how much they are selling a new releases.

Who cares how much YOU paid for them, Heck, I never bougt a game for more than 40 bucks, doesn't mean all games are selling at 39.99, it just means I'm willing to look for good deals. (either waiting for few months, or get it used).
