Forums - Sony - Some random thoughts about Metal Gear (spoiler warning)

as much as i personally like metal gear, there are just some nuances about it that bother me slightly.

1.) the cyborg ninja type character (gray fox, olga, raiden), with all its fancy moves, being able to slice up bullets as they come, manhandle metal gear rex, destroy gekko like they were dolls, just can't seem to lay a finger on snake, who doesn't really show any of those 'wow' moves and simply relies on weapons. i dunno, snake beating gray fox in single combat without weapons just doesn't make sense to me.

2.) snake/raiden fighting bosses and yet afterwards still maintains his stealth. obviously not an issue in mgs4, but in the previous installments he fights bosses, kills them, then continues to sneak around the base as if nothing happened. since he fought the bosses, obviously his presence has been detected and i would think that the guards would be more alert. unlike regular alerts, which can all be avoided if the player is skilled enough, boss alerts can't be avoided so its just an odd thing that the rest of the base doesn't care about these events.

3.) the codec, which according to campbell in mgs1, can only be heard by snake. but when he speaks, shouldn't he be heard by the guards surrounding him?

4.) stealth camoflage was used by otacon in mgs1 and he seemed to be able to move freely everywhere. according to him, there were 5 stealth prototypes in his office, so why didn't he just give snake one then and there? on the whole, if stealth camo could be manufactured as such, why doesn't snake just use them in all of his missions?

5.) when snake is caught in predetermined encounters (wolf catching him and ocelot torturing him, then the 4 stealth guys in the elevator in mgs1, the frogs surrounding him in act 5 in screaming mantis' room in mgs4), why didn't they just kill him while he was in those compromising situations instead of letting him live and eventually escape, even when they tried so hard to kill him before and after?

6.) otacon losing a loved one in every metal gear seems to show kojima hating on his kind of person. in mgs1 he lost sniper wolf, in mgs2 he lost emma, in mgs4 he lost naomi. is kojima just picking on him or what?

7.) if one man can destroy metal gears so easily (think raiden against 3 metal gear rays at a time), what's the point of manufacturing them in the first place?

8.) in mgs3, snake can easily change camoflage in the menu in stopped time. how does it make sense that he changes clothes right in the midst of a hostile environment while at the same time never having his camo index to go low?

9.) how do rations and other food items heal bullet wounds? this is why mgs3 is the best game of the series for me, because it was able to run away from the food = life mechanic. in mgs3, you had to put splints on broken bones, apply antiseptic on infected wounds, ointment on burns, and you would continue to bleed and walk gingerly if you don't heal yourself. i'm surprised kojima went away from this in mgs4

10.) octocamo is able to mimmick the background, hence making snake practically invisible at times. good. but what about the gun he always carries around? the guns dont have any octocamo capabilities, so why doesn't carrying and/or firiing a gun not lower his camo index? even if they can't see snake, what's preventing them from seeing the gun?

11.) where does snake put all those huge things that he carries around (drum can, multiple missile launchers etc.) that he can just pull it out of nowhere? I rather prefer Uncharted's way of dealing with it, only allowing two weapons to be held at a time. far more realistic than pulling a rail gun out of nowhere when its convenient.

don't get me wrong, i love mgs. just wanted to see what you guys thought about these little nuances :D

I never even thought about the whole Otacon losing his loved ones thing. Kinda sad, now that I think about it.

Most of the rest of the stuff ccan be chalked up to it being a video game. How does picking up random health item A manage to let you recover from multiple bullet wounds, broken bones, sever trauma, etc. in any game, after all?

^^ exactly. How does eating a mushroom make you giant sized?

mgs3 was able to show something different and realistic. you needed to put splints on broken bones, use antiseptic on infections, ointments on burn wounds, etc. and you would keep bleeding or walking gingerly until you heal yourself.

there's always a way around eating = life, and mgs3 shows us how. i wonder why kojima went away from it in mgs4.

how do you eat a mushroom that is bigger than you?

1. He's Snake dude.

2. Don't question it.

3. They don't actually talk, remember in MGS2 when he is supposed to talk with Ames he tells him to use nanos so they can't be heard. That's the point of nanos.

4. Cause they are poor.

5. Why don't they do this in any movie/game with spies?

6. Yeah, Otacon gets owned, over and over again.

7. Don't question it, but Ray isn't exactly weak or anything, look what it did to the people at the beginning of the game.

8. It doesn't, but you assume that if he is hiding anyways that he has time to do it.

9. This is one of the great questions of all video games with health.

10. Yeah, I actually never thought about this, and it's a good point. If he is crawling the gun would be hid underneath him though...if it wasn't on his back...which it usually is. Maybe the Octocamo can compensate for it somehow.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

1.) lol

2.) why not? lol

3.) actually they really do talk over the codec. you can see snake's lips moving on the screen in every mgs game.

4.) are they? i kinda thought they would have the money. think about it. in mgs4, they're constantly on a plane and flying around not caring about SOARING GAS PRICES! rofl. they must be rich.

5.) yeah i just hate it.

6.) yeah.

7.) if ray isn't weak, how can raiden just blow em up like they were dolls?

8.) well you could just change camo right in the middle of a firefight and disappear. how does that make sense?

9.) mgs3 was able to answer it quite well (see my edited post for details).

10.) when you shoot with a silenced weapon, it doesn't lower your camo index either. but i would think that the motion of pointing the gun, pulling the trigger, and pulling it back again would attract attention.

Dude, it's a videogame. Improbable stuff happening is the very definition of gaming.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

i know that. i'm just saying that for a game so focused with realism, it seems that there are some design choices that are kinda strange compared to everything else in game.

1) Because its Snake and Snake knows how to counter Grey Fox / Olga / Raiden ....

2) Maybe Snake doesn't want all the guards to know where he is... and the guards arn't more alert because maybe the haven't heard the news / are stupid...

3) Their Nanomachines are talking for them...

4) Well firstly stealth camo would ruin game play. Secondly it has no effect on infra-red and you CAN buy stealth camo off Drebin in MGS4.

5) If they killed Snake and the game ended it would suck.

6) Yea Otacon is one unlucky guy...

7) Metal Gear RAY is an anti-metal gear. As such it is designed to be used against REX and not infantry... and so Raiden was able use a rocket launcher to hold off the Metal Gear RAY's until Emma's virus killed them... in short he merely survived and didn't kill the RAY units ...

8) Well if Big Boss couldn't change camo quickly then MGS3 would sucked wouldn't it ... imagine needing to find a nice quiet spot to spend 1 - 2 mins changing camo every 60 second...

9) Health items recover health because ... well they just always have. As for why Kojima decided not to re-use MGS3's system -- alot of people complained that MGS3's system was just a waste of time and wanted Kojima to drop it...

10) Snake holding the gun is factored into the camo index... and the PMC's do hear you firing the gun unless its silenced... and they will find you if your not using a quiet weapon (like tranq gun) ...

11) Its called the "Magic Satchel" concept. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_satchel
