Forums - Sony - PS3 5.5Million times sold and Blu Ray taking the lead

source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2007/06/24/cnbluray124.xml&page=1

Short part of the whole article (since its too much to copy all):

The format war's weapon of mass destruction has come in the form of the games console, particularly Sony's Playstation 3. It was released in March after months of delay which contributed to the resignation of Sony Computer Entertainment chairman and CEO Ken Kutaragi, dubbed "father of the Playstation". But it contains a Blu-ray DVD player, and so far 5.5m models have been sold worldwide. The Trojan horse of Sony's high-definition campaign, consoles came with a free copy of Casino Royale to underline the fact that it is for more than just playing games.

I think the 5.5 million is a bit high, So i suppose they mean Sold to retailers

The PS3 has not sold 5.5 million units. They stated that it has, so they have lost credibility by default. Overstating a products sales by 2 million units isn't the mark of a reliable and credible source.

ok then not a lie, but a misunderstanding. The official figure from Sony was 3.8 Million Sold and 5.5 million shipped. Those extra 1.7 million have not been sold to anyone.

It doesn't help the credibility of a source when they don't understand the difference between shipped and sold.

EDIT: Oh and for the millionth time, NPD numbers account for ALL USA AND CANADA, includng online sales, mom and pop stores, Wallmart, and every single sale that goes through any retail outlet of any sort to customers. In other words, every sale of the PS3 in USA and Canada is accounted for by NPD. So stop the "NPD doesn't count X" bullshit because it does. PS3 has sold nowhere near 5.5 million and the telegraph has taken shipped figures (that is, shipped to warehouses, not even to retailers) and reported as sold. Sloppy reporting all up and not what I would expect from a "reliable" source.

Yes the 5.5 million is SOLD to Stores ,so shipped .The sold to customers number was around 3.8 when Sony gave data and is 3.52 (3.57 or so tomorrow ) after this site .

yet more misinformation from Diomedes! You're really getting to be the master of misinformation aren't you? Perhaps you ought to re-read that Sony financial report.

5.5 million was shipped to warehouses. This is basically every console that has left the manufacturing plant and was being sotred by Sony.

3.8 million was sold to retailers. I believe when Sony says sold in this case it actually means "On store shelves" and not "they have ordered it but it's on the way". Even so, this is sold to retailers, ie, Sony's customers. Whether you spin this as sold to consumers or not doesn't matter, the 5.5 million number is clear. 5.5 million is "left manufacturing".

If anyone can find the thread where this was discussed please let me know, I'm looking for it but my forum searching skills could use some work =)

Omgwtfbbq, thank you for saving me the trouble of correcting Diomedes. I hope my posts weren't as bad as his when the Saturn and N64 were getting handled by the PS1...
