Forums - Gaming - Study reveals Wii is most popular console for HDTVs in Canada

There is also reasonably wide usage of the Playstation 2 (29%), the original X-Box (17%), and the Nintendo Gamecube (12%), while one in ten high-def gamers (10%) say they have “other” consoles.

Oh dear god, I find myself agreeing with something you said.  I think I need to lay down

The sample size is fine, I'm more concerned about the data being collected online. But Ipsos-Reid is a fairly reputable firm, so this survey does carry some weight.

Or maybe I want to believe because of the sweet, delicious irony of it.

To the people who are wondering why it would be unusual that the leading console is more likely to be connected to an HDTV: It isn't. But this evidence does run counter to the oft-made assertion that HD console adoption will pick up as HDTV adoption increases. HDTV owners are favoring the Wii, just as SDTV owners are.

The results are not surprising at all. There is no link between demand of HDTV and HD Console. The idea that there was is just an opinion. The reality is that most people(we are excluded since were gaming fans) do not base there console purchase based on their TV or their TV purchase based on there console. I personally don't.

I think this information should be placed as common sense. The problem is that apx 700 isn't the best, bit it's also far from pathetic. It's not like 70 people.

Wait, wait, wait, Canadians have TVs now?

As a Canadian, the study doesn't surprise me ...

One of my long standing arguments surrounding HDTV signals not being the (main) selling feature on HDTVs is what I have observed in Canada. Because of the (awful) CRTC's influence in the market, there is little competition for cable companies and as a result there is (almost) no free HDTV channels and to get a decent number of HD content (when you factor in the expensive set-top box) is very expensive. As a result, very few people who own HDTVs in Canada have any content that is displayed at higher than DVD quality on their TV.

In this environment you’d assume that HDTVs would not be that popular, but (last I heard) Canada was one of the fastest to adopt to HDTV in the western world. The main driving factor seems to be that flat-pannel TVs give the average person the opportunity to buy a very large TV and put it into their fairly modest room.

Now, if you’re watching DVD movies on your 60’ plasma or LCD TV is the output resolution of a Wii, PS2, Gamecube or Xbox really going to bother you that much?

Well...I'd guess most people would think those who have an HDTV would likely have an HD system as well and maybe a Wii but it seems that's likely not the case.

I understand that, but because it's outselling the competition by so much, it would have to have a higher chance at a higher HDTV adoption rate.

So the results of this are slightly inconclusive.

A lot of people do try to argue "Once people get HDTVs the Wii is screwed". As for the sample size... people have used 1,000 for surveys on american purchasing habits. Canda is a less diverse and much less populus.
