Forums - Microsoft - How long can Microsoft keep charging for Xbox live?

Just Live? How about charging $80 for a rechargable rumble controller.
Or $120 for a mere 20GB HDD
or $120 for WiFi when PS3 and Wii have it for free.

Hey, if you are gonna slam Ms just for the sake of it, at least get the prices right.

Well, he didn't invoke the RROD, so you have to give him some credit for that...

12 million xbox live gold users can't be wrong.... we pay for it to ensure we get as many possible games that have online multiplayer... allow me to explain... wheres the online multiplayer for Virtua tennis 3, Virtua fighter 5 and Tony hawks project 8 but to name a few on ps3? they all have online multiplayer on the 360, theres now over 150 XBLA titles and a very high percentage of them have online multiplayer...... I love Doom multiplayer or playing 2 player on Ikaruga or Streets of rage 2, if microsoft make xbox live free it wouldn't have 80%+ of games that have online multiplayer that it currently has, if it was free it would have around the same amount of games that have online multiplayer as ps3 does... a POOR 55%

I'm not certain I see your logic.

You are suggesting that if Live goes free, that less games will be compatible with it? Despite the fact that one of the big selling points for 360 titles is such play? Am I reading you correctly?

look at how many ps3 games have online multiplayer.... and look how many playstation network games have multiplayer.... they pale in comparison to games that have online multiplayer for 360 games and xbox live.... if xbox live was free, then a lot of games that have multiplayer on xbla could cease to exist... we know the big games (Gears, Halo , forza ect) will always have multiplayer, but if xbla was free a lot of the older games would no longer have multiplayer.... now Quake 4 or Prey might not mean much to some people but they do to me and i enjoy playing them online... and on xbla i love Ikaruga, streets of rage 2 and Doom multiplayer.... also remember that SEGA never bothered to give the ps3 versions of Virtua tennis 3 or Virtua fighter 5 any multiplayer on ps3.... VT 3 and VF 5 have multiplayer on 360.... if xbla was free games like that could go by the wayside and no longer have multiplayer..... hence myself and many millions more will continue to pay for xbox live to keep those games multiplayer for many years to come.... i currently own 24 xbox 360 games and of those 24 games 22 of them have online multiplayer... i own 13 xbla games and 12 of them offer online multiplayer.... would i like to see these games lose their multiplayer capabilities sometime down the road.... HELL NO....

Well, I think one of the main reasons why Xbox live charges is for the renivestment they put back into it. If they didn't chage for live they sure as hell wouldn't have Rare spending their time working on the fall update.

I think the best example of why they charge for live is actually the PSN. Look at how home has basically fallen apart, if Sony was charging for PSN you can bet Home would be up and running by now.

Charging for Live allows MS to pay employees to actually work on the service without it being a drag on the their bottom line.

His profile said Canada so I was going to say something like that otherwise. Since I don't know how much that stuff costs in Canada, I didn't say anything.

Wow, your post is very confusing. We're talking about Xbox Live, I'm not sure how this would mean games on Xbox Live and the Xbox Live Arcade would be worse if Xbox Live didn't have the yearly fee?

I don't think this makes any sense at all. Not having a yearly fee suddenly makes Microsoft not require that games have online or have certain features?

*edit* Also, I don't know about Virtua Tennis, but with Virtua Fighter, the lack of online was because of the arcade version I believe. They even said that they could implement it because they did with the 360, but I doubt they didn't because the PSN is free.

I haven't met ANYONE who owns a 360 and isn't happy to pay for Xbox Live.

Hi there :)

You just met one, albeit over the internet.

I've been putting off buying Gold membership since I bought my 360, but it's getting harder and harder to do that because it prevents me from fully utilising the features of my games. I'm sure I'll give in next month but I won't be happy about it.

And just to clarify I think Xbox Live is worth the money. It's online multiplayer I'm not happy to pay for, and that is what I would be paying for afterall, given that we Silvers get everything else of any substance.

ditto, I would rather get the multiplayer part for free, and be able to pay extra for the other stuff.

why do so few psn games have online multiplayer compared to xbox live.... in short, thats what im getting at and i know that if xbox live was free it would have a POOR amount of games that have online multiplayer just like psn has...  thats the be all and end all of it.....

That's mainly where my argument comes from. Which is why the PSN has suited me just fine and how I've found no interest at all with Windows Live. Though now that Windows Live is free, I don't think buying a GFW game will be an issue now. Gears of War on the PC has now gained my interest, though I'd rather just wait for Gears of War 2 to come out since I've already beaten the first one with my friend on his 360.

Obviously the guy has an axe to grind and just doing a quick cheapshot on the fly but hey at least the RROD is a legitimate issue - it's affected a lot of people. It's been plasted all over the web that 30$ ethernet bridges work just fine but no for these guys wifi on the 360 is always a bazillion of dollars.
