Has there been a shift toward handheld gaming in recent years, given the success of DS and PSP?

Compared to console gaming, where you have to sit in front of the TV for a long time, handheld gaming is more suitable for today’s busy lifestyle. Handheld gaming was only a supporting player in the past, but I expect it to take the main role in the future gaming world.

This is the part of the interview I actually found very interesting, and I couldn't help but agree.

I think you are right about that and I have thought so for a while and that worries me. I don´t want my precious console gaming to take the backseat :(. Haven´t had a handheld since the original Gameboy, maybe I should try and get in to that again. How are todays handheld games? what quality do they have if you compae them to consoles? Are they at the level of PS1,N64 or PS 2?

I would compare the DS to the SNES, because most of the great games are in 2D. The good 3D games are either on N64 level or above.

That made me actually interested in getting into handhelds again. The reaso I wuit handhelds was I didn´t realy like the gaming experience that much back then but I take it that has evolved along with the handhelds too?

Nintendo has been the driving force behind any growth that has occurred, would that be correct?
I believe that’s correct without any doubt. Nintendo’s console and handheld have brought in a large number of new gamers. The success of this strategy allowed Japan’s gaming market to make a solid recovery from its slowing trend.

Then the "Nintendo destroy the industry" thing is 100% false.

Yes, absolutely. The number of games I purchased for my handhelds (GBC, GBA, DS) greatly improved with each new one. I wouldn't buy more games if the experience didn't get better.

While the games for the original Game Boy were nearly everytime simplified versions of the home console games, the 2D games on the DS are on par with Super Nintendo games. If not better, because game design has improved over the last decade. The 3D games aren't that compelling (even though there are some good ones), but that could be easily blamed on them feeling like simplified versions of today's 3D games we see on home consoles.

If you are looking for great 2D games, you have to get a DS.

Thats the genre i have been missíng the most and I really have ignored handhelds to the point it should be criminal thats why I am asking about it since I know absolutly nothing mmore then Nintendo have been doing great.

Well you convinced me, this fall my mission will be to get back into handhelds again.
