Much has been made of the fact of how bad E3 was this year ... especially how Nintendo did not deliver anything noteworthy

(see MTV Blog http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/07/22/nintendo-and-its-e3-fans/ or G4's Xplay not naming a Nintendo best in show).

However, the approach to cater to the mainstream media worked. While the gaming press fixated on other things, Nintendo got kudos for everything from inspiring Microsoft, to jamming with Wii Music, to having the biggest surprise announcement of the show (GTA for DS).

No mention in the article that I can find of what most gamers consider to be the biggest announcement of the show -- FF XIII for Xbox 360.

So does this show that Nintendo's "Blue Ocean for E3" strategy work? (It is talked about in other threads that Nintendo intentionally took a broader perspective instead of making core announcements at the show).

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Around the Network

Well, I'm not from USA so I don't know what was the reaction of other media, but probably they didn't care about Final Fantasy either. If the reaction was positive in general for Nintendo, then their strategy worked, but unlike Wii Fit I really doubt Wii Music had the same impact.
