That's because they release shitty OS like Vista and companies are obliged to pay for 1000 licenses because they fear to use Linux and Mac is even more expansive. The reasons why Microsoft make so much money is because they don't have any competition. Microsoft throws already a lot of money for the XBox to buy exclusives and stuff like that. They have no reason to spend even more.

How do you say that Microsoft has no competition when you just named a free operation system linux and Macintosh!! Last I checked, Apple was also a huge multi-billion dollar corporation making tons of mac vs pc commercials! Oh thats competition! Jobs VS Gates! Hello?? The competion is there dude. People are ridiculous!

This would just show how desperate microsoft is becoming. And chances are they still wouldnt outsell PS3 even at that price point. (Take the current situation in europe for example)

Price is a weapon that Microsoft could have used many times by now to increase their marketshare and prevent the other consoles from passing the XBox 360; for example, had they dropped the XBox 360 to $299 before the PS3 and Wii launched they would have (potentially) capatalized on a lot of Playstation fans who were upset with the $599 price of the PS3, and also captured some potential Wii owners who couldn't find a system.

The fact that they haven't reduced the price (that much) implies that either they can't afford to reduce the price or they're not that interested in dropping the price. Personally, I suspect a combination of the two ... The RROD combined with (still) being unable to manufacture their CPU and GPU using a 55nm or 45nm process means that Microsoft may not be able to afford to sell the XBox 360 at a more reasonable price, and they may not want to be dramatically lower in price than the PS3 so that people do not make the assumption that it is technically inferior to the PS3 (an assumption many people made about the Gamecube compared to the PS2).
