ESA study: 40 percent of US gamers are women

In the midst of E3's chaos last week, the Entertainment Software Association let its annual demographic study slip out, revealing that 2/5 of gamers in the USA are women. The release itself contained information from the ESA's annual study of American households, and it revealed a wide variety of information about just who is actually playing video games these days.

The 2008 Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry also revealed that the average age of gamers has gone up to 35, 65 percent of American households play video games, and there are almost twice as many women playing video games as there are teenage boys (including Circe, of WomenGamers, pictured here).

The information was collected from 1,200 households that own either a PC used for gaming and/or a game console. For those who are interested, the study is available for download straight from the ESA.

but in all seriousness, I think it's because of the Nintendo DS, Wii, and Guitar Hero/Rock Band. I see a lot of women (or parents buying for their daughters) picking up systems just for those types of games. There are also a larger amount of women browsing the gaming department where I work in general.

Don't forget flash games, WoW, and Pop-cap.

Really 40 percent thats alot.



 

40% doesn't just happen in like 4 years. Its obviously a long term trend and Nintendo were smart enough to spot this years ago. This survey actually makes me feel better about Nintendo's approach, specifically that teenage boys arn't the bigger market. Im not sure that PS XB realised, or they did and had no fukn idea how to sell to them. Thats pretty pathetic considering were talkin about Sony and MS.

Maybe the reality is that the whole industry isn't just for hardcore nerds anymore, now where the fuck is my Wii ware knitting simulator? huh huh?

´My mom plays PC games such as Diablo 2, sacred, Heroes of might and magic and dungeons siege.

Atleast in her case it has nothing to do with nintendo :p (Shes danish though, not american)
