Forums - Nintendo - Opinion: The Casual Game Has Gone Too Far

@vaio - I enjoy your articles, I don't surf the net looking for stuff, just here and a couple other places, so if it wasn't for your postings, I'd miss out on a lot of stuff.

OT: I think Nintendo made it pretty clear they were targeting the casual market this generation, so why do people act surprised when they show casual games?

Currently Playing:  Saints Row 2 | Battlefield 2 | Company of Heroes

Recently Beaten: Gears of War | Super Mario Galaxy | Darwinia | MGS4 | Sam and Max Ep. 4, Portal | Mirror's Edge | Uncharted | Mass Effect

Looking Forward to: Alan Wake | Splinter Cell : Conviction | The Last Guardian | Batman: Arkham Asylum | SMG2 | Mass Effect 2 |

I think the author is making a valid point. Nintendo has been milking the casual market for all it is worth. Churning out fast cash titles with little to no substance. As someone who has owned every single Nintendo console launched I can see where the frustration is coming from. Nintendo used to be far more original, and they had a reputation for top shelf quality.

The author might not be a core died in the wool loyalist, but he probably did have greater expectations from Nintendo. Quite frankly so did I, and a number of others on these forums. There was a time when you knew that Nintendo was going to deliver a core game every couple months, and it was going to be a solid nine in the reviews column. Quite frankly watered down casual fair like Wii music, Wii resort, and Animal Crossing just is not going to cut it. I agree that Animal Crossing was fun for a few weeks, but the concept is stale at this point. Nintendo is putting their old core loyalists on one hell of a fast as it were.

Let me say this I think any manufacturer that placed space in their conference for casual audience games were really doing something stupid. The people that will play these ultra casual games, are not the people that watch game conferences. Those that watch game conferences are hobbyists. So when you make a presentation and basically ignore them. Yes they are going to feel slighted. Nintendo was the worst of the lot at E3. Though both Microsoft and Sony had similarly stupid parts in their conferences.

Nintendo really needs to do a better job with their library unless they are looking to alienate the core gamers that have supported the last four consoles they brought to market. No I do not even acknowledge the Virtual Boy. The point is this is a problem, and just laying out lip service isn't going to get the job done. I think it is a shame that Nintendo lost Rare. Were Rare still a Nintendo second party they could take up the core market slack for Nintendo. Then Nintendo could push these ultra casual titles, and someone would take care of their core audience.

I am not attacking Nintendo I just agree with the author that Nintendo being utterly consumed with placating the casual market is nothing less then a tragedy. Gone are the days of Miyamoto talking about the complexity of camera control in a virtual world. Replaced by a sad figure playing a remote control like a Sax.

Before anyone rails on me I would be equally disappointed if a Rare started making games for toddlers, or Epic began to churn out doll dressing games. The tragedy is that the talent is going to waste putting so much effort into making games so far below their skill level. I do not think there is anything wrong with holding a developer to some standard of delivery especially when they have proven to be so good in the past?

You have had SIX generations of being catered for! You have a library of thousands of hardcore games!

You are not the only demograph in the world. Why is it so bad that Nintendo is looking at a different one for a little?

The only thing I don't really get about Wii Sports 2 is how it's supposed to work with such a focus on single-player, when the main appeal of the original was the multi-player.

When i go to my friend's house ,one got Ps3 and one got Wii.I see this

and

But my friend that own Ps3 don't have a daughter(he's single) ,so i decided to add a girl in Ps3 side to make it equal.(and all characters above're made up ,because i didn't wanna draw my friends face.lol)

So I think Nintendo already know people happy when they see someone happy and if you are a family man ,why won't you do not want to see you childs happy? This maybe a reason why many one buy Wii.

And i'm so sorry that i didn't check Vaio profile 1st before say something fool ,maybe because i saw his topic about Wii before go to bed.And wake up again and see his topic about Wii again.

I'm accept ,i'm foolish and really should be a troll.

Don´t be to hard on your self, I am more then happy to forgive you and enjoy your stay here without thinking I have a grudge.

If they didn´t Nintendo would die out pretty fast in a few generations or less, this way they ensure that the next generatio kids know what Nintedo is and not only the kids but the granparents of those kids and non gaming parents which in turn raises the chances of the said family will return to a Nintendo console when the next gen starts or the one after that. What they have done this couple of years is to throw many of their known franchises out there for their true fans and then ensuring both a good cash flow from the casuals and name reckognition from the  casuals, kids and their famylies wich will be in their favor for more then this and the next generation.

Luckily not that many.

And they are all obnoxious?

There aren´t any Milan fans around here besides my family and they haven´t got any redeeming qualities either ;)

these threads are getting mad man

If the guy who wrote that article really IS a hardcore gamer, he should have learnt to find information about the games he wants at many other alternative locations. Nintendo has a limited number of franchises at their disposal, so he need not complain now that a new Mario and Zelda game are in the works, as well as the other third party offerings.

P.S. Pity that ACM failed to reach the Champions League. I personally like Juventus.

The snobcore gamers are getting more and more annoying as this generation continues. Gaming has been looked down upon for years and people were upset. Now that more people are embracing it, these guys get upset again.

I totally agree with this. I've been gaming since I was young and I found through out the years most people weren't really into games and the hardcore gamers complained because people weren't accepting of gaming. Now maybe over the past 5 years more people are accepting gaming and hardcore gamers are complaining about that. It just seems to me hardcore gamers are never happy.

Yeah it´s a pity but I think it is good for them and it gives them a chance to win UEFA wich they never have and get the team together so they can take CL next season. Juve (the old lady) has been through some tough times and is getting back slowly to their glory days but  I think that will take time before they actually will be back like they used to be.
