Forums - Sony Discussion - Need some PS3 insurance?

Even though it's currently only offered in the UK, Sony is offering a program called 'Sony Continous Play' for owners of Sony consoles/handheld.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/do-you-have-protection%3F/sony-valiantly-protecting-british-consoles-271187.php

"If you own a PlayStation 3, chances are you paid a considerable sum of cash for it. As such, that makes it a valuable asset. And what do you do with valuable assets? Yes, grown-ups in the house, you pay considerable sums of cash to ensure they never come to any harm.

Which brings us to SCEE's Continuous Play scheme, whereby British PlayStation owners (PS2, PSP or PS3) can pay a flat monthly sum to ensure that should anything happen to their console (including you putting your foot through it in a fit of rage, as it covers problems or damage), Sony will swing by, pick up the broken unit and get a replacement to you within two working days. And they'll do it as many times as they need to; there's no limit on replacements or extra cost so long as you keep paying your monthly rate.

Protection for your PSP or PlayStation 2 will set you back £2.49 per month, while a PS3 will cost you £4.99 a month. Which works out to be £59.88 a year for your PS3 or £29.88 a year for the other two. A tad pricey, then, but considering you get unlimited replacement consoles if you can afford it, it'd be worth it just for the convenience. Or for the fact you'd have the chance to smash up a PS3 every week and not have to face the horrible consequences."

That's the website and below is something taken from the terms of use, which will dispel some people thinking (though it's kind of funny) about taking a PS3 and destroying it every month (a la smashmyxbox/Ipod/PS3/Wii.com type sites) and then sending out for a new one.

"

Replacement of Equipment will not be provided if the Equipment is still covered by any suppliers guarantee or if the claim arises from;

  • The Equipment being recalled by the supplier.
  • Your failure to follow the equipment operating instructions.
  • Use of your Equipment in a non-domestic or commercial environment.
  • Theft, attempted theft, malicious damage or damage caused by fire or explosion.
  • Floods, lightning, storms, frost or other bad weather conditions.
  • Any problem with the supply of electricity.
  • Cosmetic damage such as damage to paintwork or dents or scratches to the Equipment.
  • Any modification or alteration to the Equipment.
  • Any item or accessory which was not included in the original Equipment packaging."

That doesn't sound too bad, though a little pricey, and you can get it after your current warranty with wherever you bought it from is over. I think it's an interesting way to get some money back for Sony, as long as the PS3's quality doesn't take a sudden dive of course, lol.

xbox 360 can use this plan better

crappy old school NES games are more entertaining than next-gen games.

why? Microsoft already replaces faulty Xboxes for free. The only advantage of this plan is accidental damage. Are you saying Xbox customers are more clumsy?

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

this is a worthless post... nintendo and sony has always had the best standards when it comes to taking care of the consoles... microsoft had a 90 day warranty system for the longest... sony and nintendo have always had a year warranty...

Not exactly worthless in two ways. One, it is one way Sony is trying to get some money back, which will depend on how many faulty systems there are and how many people decide to partake in the service. Two, this isn't exactly a warranty you get when you buy a system, this is something you could get (and cancel) at any time. Like stated in the origonal post, after your current warranty is finially over after X amount of months (or years), you could get this. I think that's quite different from the system having a 1 year warranty when you buy it.

That works out to about $120 a year to insure a PS3, $60 a year to insure a PS2. Considering that PS2s sell for $130, it hardly seems worth it...

Maybe not as important for the PS2 or PSP since they're so cheap. However, isn't the USD weaker, so wouldn't a PS2 cost more there if you did a direct conversion?

Eh I'm bored so I did a conversion for the hell of it.

Converting it, the 30 (for a year of the PS2 insurance) in the UK looks like it would be converted to just about $60. The PS2 costs I think like 130 in the UK, that's just about $260.

To compare, 425 for a PS3 is $847 and a year of the insurance would be $119.
