Forums - Microsoft - I'm having problems with my new 360

Are you sure the DVD isn't scratched?

*EDIT: Yeah, d21lewis beat me. o_o

I'm very careful with electronics and media so no, not a single scratch on the disk.  I'm going to try to replay the intro video and see if it freezes again.

If its *brand new*, I would take it straight back - and demand a replacement unit (on the spot). Its just not good enough.

Yeah, I'm thinking of doing that.

I personally would never use a 360 to watch movies. If you JUST got it, you might be able to return it to the store for a replacement. I would do that if it was me.

What's the point in offering DVD playback on a console if people can't use it?  I hate it when I "shouldn't" do something that advertised on the box.  Please do not take this the wrong way, I in no way mean to be hostile towards you.

It's your console. Please do with it as you see fit. The 360 however, has a few issues with it. One is heat, and the other is drive reliability. Playing a 2 hour movie impacts both. It's also a little louder then a DVD player.

It's just my personal preference, that if I can use a $40 tool to produce the same (better if you include noise) quality experience as a $450 device with known reliability issues, I will take that option.

It was just a suggestion.

Mine had the problem for a while, (before it RROD'd) and I know this is sort of a homage to the NES days, but while the disc tray is open... spray some compressed air into the system.

It might be that a spec of dust has settled onto the lens. If you don't have a can of compressed air, just blow into the system.

try different dvd's.
turn the system upright, maybe that will work.

these are all forms of troubleshooting that should be done before you take it back.

I understand what you're saying.  I was hoping to do away with my DVD player :)

I've just tried the intro video again and it played fine.  I'm going to do all of what you suggested and report back.

Yeah, it sounds like a spindle problem if it's a Hitachi drive. If it's a BenQ then idk.
Sending it back would be best anyway.
