I personally would never use a 360 to watch movies. If you JUST got it, you might be able to return it to the store for a replacement. I would do that if it was me.

What's the point in offering DVD playback on a console if people can't use it? I hate it when I "shouldn't" do something that advertised on the box. Please do not take this the wrong way, I in no way mean to be hostile towards you.

It's your console. Please do with it as you see fit. The 360 however, has a few issues with it. One is heat, and the other is drive reliability. Playing a 2 hour movie impacts both. It's also a little louder then a DVD player.

It's just my personal preference, that if I can use a $40 tool to produce the same (better if you include noise) quality experience as a $450 device with known reliability issues, that I will take that option.

It was just a suggestion.

I understand what you're saying.  I was hoping to do away with my DVD player :)
