Forums - Sony - I think i want a handheld....Why choose a PSP?

It HAD excellent third party support, and there are many good games, but it won't have too much 3rd party support anymore. If want a multimedia player along with a hand helds its an excellent choice for you. If you just want to play games that are more targeted to hand helds get the ds. I personally prefer the ds, but both of them get play time from me, and the psp is also a nice handheld as well.

Let me try telling you why not get a PSP:
1) The worst battery life in the history of portable gaming. Really, expect it to last 3-4 hours average (2 and half online)
2) Ports of lame PS2 games. There are way too many lousy ports. The PSP is so powerful that it is easy to grab a shitty PS2 game port it and call it a day.
3) Not enough original games. Even the exclusives play like dumbed down PS2 games. If you did not enjoy Silent Hill, Metal Gear, God of War or GTA in the PS2 you won`t enjoy them on the PSP.
4) The analog stick is shit. The lack of a second analog hurt the gameplay on some 3D games and direct PS2 ports.
5) The thing can`t keep itself clean even if your life depended on it. If you don`t play it using gloves, you will leave fingermarks all over the place (washing your hands is not enough)
6) Frail. Not really a problem if you are the only one using it. Just don`t drop it or let kids near it.

1.obviously this one has not tried the psp slim.

(much better battery)

2. You know that many ps2 ports were made of some psp games though right ? There isn't a lot going the other way imo.

3. It has plenty of unique gaming experiences. It crosses everything from high oxygen third person shooter to guiding a yellow blob by tilting the screen.

4. True, the analog isn't as good as a regular one. But it's usable.

5. Also i haven't left fingermarks all over mine but i don't use "gloves" playing.

6. I carry mine in a small bag most of the time. I'd do that even if it was a ds. I doubt that the ds is a lot more robust though. (ps. i haven't damaged mine yet but i have let a 9 year old play on it.)

Dude, you gotta make your own call... but all i can say is, the psp is the best handheld i've had.

It has a lot more mature content than the ds.. and it's more powerful.. (no cell tho XD)

Check out my game about moles ^

I would get the DS because the PSP goes through major gaming droughts and is currently in the middle of one right now. I personally put 4x as much time into my DS than my PSP. Then again, I don't use my PSP as a multimedia device, so it's strictly about the games for me.

whens the likely release of a PSP2?

There isn't one at the moment. It isn't even annouced. I'd get either the God of War pack or the Ratchet pack.

any chance of a price drop later this year?

edit:

and how long is the battery life on the slim version?

1) By much better you mean 1 extra hour. And that would be with the minimun light and a game that doesn`t push the PSP hardware.
2) X-men Legends 2, The Warriors, Disgaea, Lego Star Wars 2, Tony Hawk`s Underground 2, Sega Genesis Collection (port of a port). Just do some research on sports games and you will see what I mean, there are many more. There are also lots of ports from other consoles like Castlevania, FF Tatics, Breath of Fire 3, Tales of Eternia, Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Destiny 2, FF and FF 2.
3) For every unique game there are 20 watered down PS2 games. DBZ, Winning Eleven, God of War, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, GTA, Ridge Racer, Dynasty Warriors, Socom, Ratchet and Clank, Tekken, Tony Hawk, Tomb Raider. They are not all bad, just inferior. I want a different experience from the PS2, not a dumbed down PS2 game.

Yet another completely unbias opinion by someone who has probably never even touched a PSP.

Should I post a serial number?

The same as the original PSP.

You only get a longer battery life if you use the old PSP's battery in the current PSP Slim. Which would mean you'd need to upgrade.

The PSP slim uses less energy... but it comes with a smaller battery.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/baby-got-back/psp-slim-battery-life-confusion-280487.php

3-6 hours is the official time.

Like I said in the other thread, I favor the DS, because it generally has more games. But the PSP has some awesome games as well, like Patapon, etc. And it has more mature action titles like MGS: PO, God of War, and Killzone: Liberation.

And it has various media capabilities that make it stand out, like the ability to play mp3s, etc.

But overall, the DS has so many more games (RPGs, platformers, adventure games like Zelda, etc.) that it's the better choice, imo.

But boy do I want a PSP right now. :P

I agree that PSP has smaller library and also about the battery part... Yet I think those games are already in the Playstation "PORTABLE" word. I can't play my PS2 during a boring long trip. Since it's not a PS2 I can't expect the same graphic quality. So it's pretty much helpful when you're bored. Heck if you're bored with games why not store some movies so you can watch it on trips.

DS on the other hand, same but with a bigger library of games, except graphics is not the main thing but more on gameplay. I don't know about any multimedia features so I don't dare say anything about it. Although I do own one but never touched it yet. :P
