Forums - Microsoft - Xbox cloud storage use?

As I suggested in http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=34362 and was ignored, cloud storage is a feasible solution for the console hard drive capacity problem and to a lesser extent, the disc drive problem.  Cloud storage is basically a virtual collective hard drive btw.  For Microsoft, those with Passport/Live accounts could associate them with the cloud storage service and use a secure server for storage.

Cons: The server farm would be bigger than any today--and that's acres we're talking about.

I think you answered yourself with that last sentence. Servers cost alot of money. This would need to see them increase expodentially. Therefore cost shoots up, and they are just barely riding profitability as is.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

Just wrong. Bigger HDD's are the solution.

Can't be that expensive, since XBL member get ragged on about how we pay for nothing, when others are getting something for free...lol.

Well, I do not agree with your statement of the server farms being larger than any before it. Hypothetically, there could exist one version of a game on the server and everyone could hit that one instance(in the real world you would want more than one instance so that load balancing could be implemented for heavy traffic). Each players profile would have a list of purchased content associated with it. The only thing that could use up more space would be save files and for the most part these do not take up that much space. This IS the way of the future, but it might not be for a very long time. Internet speeds have to increase and the penetration of high speed internet has to increase as well. I think it would be a great thing for both the environment and consumers.

You would need huge speed and bandwidth increases to make this viable, and you would still need a HDD to cache files locally in order to make the game playable without too many loading screens.
