Forums - Microsoft - Want to purchase 360, need some advice!

Hi,

I'm interested in purchasing an Xbox 360.  I'm currently own a Wii and have been looking into getting one of the HD consoles.  After much thought, I have decided to get a 360 instead of the PS3.

I guess I should state my setup.  I don't have an HD TV and don't plan on getting one anytime soon.  I've heard the Arcade pack is not a wise choice and I don't think I have much use for an Elite.

Anyhow, the bottom line is FutureShop is selling the 360 Pro for 299.99 + Gears of Wars and GTA 4.  I'm very interested in getting these games and it seems like such a good deal.  However, I'm not too familiar with all the models + the announcement of the 60G.  Is the 20G Pro a good choice... especially after reading this

Will I have problems with load/install times if I choose a 20G over the 60G?  Is RROD common amongst Pros?

A 20G is a bad choice, it's too darn small... you might want to save a lot of stuff on your HD, and that's incompatible with installing games...

Pro is a wise choice. You should get the latest motherboard called falcon...and it has HDMI port for HD (if you need it later on) and it should not give you RROD.

Also, you should have plenty of room with the 20 gig hard drive...and that you can always upgrade later.

The pro model comes with HD cables as well as regular RCA cables so you can use them on both types of TVs.

299 for that bundle is amazing value...I suggest you act fast. I would buy an Elite right away if it was bundled with those games...but sadly its only the pro console on sale at futureshop...

It's good value, just make sure that you have another HD if you need one, you can connect one like the dude above me said.

Install times are small/optional/infrequent on the Xbox360 but if you hate loading and you don't mind installing then the 60gb would be perfect for you.

The Xbox360 isn't seen by many people as problematic for loading times, but there are a couple of games like Mass Effect where you'll see some obvious benifit to an optional full install if you want.

Tease.

What do you mean by incompatible. If I download content then I can't install games? I'd be interested in GTA4 content... maybe more but unlikely.

Also, what about memory cards... do I need one to save games or does it save on the drive. I'm sorry if I sound incompetent, I'm just learning about all this stuff.

The 20GB Pro for $299.99 + GOW and GTAIV is a great choice, as your getting the games you want.

It all depends on what's important to you. The load times of every X360 game are pretty good. The install feature just makes it even faster if you need it for a specific game.

The big question is: Do you plan on downloading, and keeping a lot of content on your Xbox 360? If your going to download a ton of demos, and movies, the 20GB should be fine. But if your planning on buying a ton of Downloadable content (and I mean a large amount), then consider the 120GB later on.

RROD isn't common on Pros. If you can check out the Pro your buying at FutureShop before you buy, look at see if you can find when the console was made. If it was made later than 9/07, you'll be fine (and most shops have been moving X360 stock quick enough, that the likelyhood of you getting an older console is slim to none).

So yeah, I'd go with the 20GB if your not doing a ton of online downloading.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Xen is trying to confuse you.

What he's talking about is that if you want to install games on your Xbox 360 + download a large bit of content, then it might not all fit on a 20GB HDD.

You do not need a memory card on a Pro. That 20GB hard drive is there for saving games. Only get a memory card if your wanting to copy data onto that, and take it to a friends house for some reason.

Incompatible as in you will lack free space mate... you don't need memory cards on any console possessing a HD.

Also, I'm not trying to confuse him, bad phrasing? heh.

How do i go about checking/asking if the motherboard is Falcon?

The bundle is at FutureShop Canada and is for the Pro + two free games of choice.
