Man denies hitting kids during game

July 19, 2008

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A West Hartford man denied charges that a violent video game drove him to violence against children.

On Tuesday, David L. Barr, 38, pleaded innocent in White River Junction District Court to two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence, which carry a combined maximum penalty of two years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

According to an affidavit filed with the court, June 4, a school nurse called Hartford Police to report suspected abuse of two boys, ages 11 and 10. Police met the boys and saw a large bruise on the upper right arm of one boy and smaller bruises on the upper left arm of the other, court records state.

The boys told police they had been playing "Halo 3" with Barr — a video game in which players attempt to kill each other — and every time one of the boys killed Barr's character he would punch the boy in the arm, police said.

When interviewed by police, Barr admitted punching the boys while playing video games with them, but said he was drinking at the time and did not realize how hard he was hitting them, according to court records. Barr told police that when he saw the bruises on the boys the next day, he told them to say they had been hurt playing baseball, police said.

Barr told police he recognized he had a drinking problem and would enroll in parenting and substance abuse classes, court records state.

After pleading innocent, Barr was released without bail on the condition he not drink and not harass the boys in the future.

The alcohol was the reason behind the man's violent outburst. Do not blame the game.

Funny that they lay focus on the fact that he was playing a video game, and the fact that he was just stone-drunk.

Everything about this article sucks. In fact, read the description for Halo 3:

"A video game in which players attempt to kill each other"

Wow, it makes it sound like a very charming game. Either the media is completely out of touch with videogames, or they're as biased as ever. Hell, in Mario Kart, players attempt to run each other off the road, possibly off of cliffs to their inevitable death.

Either way, I think the kids quickly realized to let their dad win.

Ummm, well, actually, if I really get into playing halo 3, i get really agitated and angry if someone bothers me.

Sure, you can argue that getting into a game (or any other activity) is going to make you a little cranky when you get frustrated. Not like games are the only cause of that.

Still, I can't believe that a video games are evil type of argument is being placed over the fact that he was drunk while striking his children and then tells them to say that their bruises were caused from sports? Apparently it's not the alcohol making him unable to correctly judge his actions as well as making him give generally poor parenting decisions, it's the fact that he's playing a video game?

Deplorable..... I'm really considering making an e-mail address to make a comment on that page.

I would aswell. It's cheaper than breaking $10,001 worth of controllers.
