Forums - Sony - Fact Checking Sony's E3 Presser

http://kotaku.com/5025454/fact+checking-sonys-e3-presser

Claim 1: 1.8 million PS3s, 1.6 million PSPs and 1.5 million PS2s sold in the this year.
Not sure. Annual U.S. sales as of April 2008, according to NPD Group, were .99 million for PS3, .95 million for PS2, and .96 million for PSP.

Claim 2: More than 1.9 million songs sold via the SingStore worldwide.
Sounds false. SingStore's got around 200 songs online. That would mean each one has been downloaded more than 9,000 times!

Claim 3: More than 20 million pieces of content downloaded in June, and 180 million downloads since launch.
Sounds high. This is what Jack Tretton said in February 2008: "Playstation Network total downloads exceeded 6.3 million in February 2008, compared to 6.6 million at the peak of the holiday season in December 2007." From 6.6 million in February to 20 million in June? Impressive, if true.

Claim 4: Most PS3 games don't use even 80 percent of the SPUs.
True. Although MGS4 used almost all of the PS3s power, according to Kojima, the majority of games for the system likely do not.

I'm not sure why they think Claim 2 sounds false... I don't see why they wouldn't of sold each song 9000 times on average...

Anyways, I always like these fact checking articles.. usually though I only see them for political debates

Claim 1 is probably shipped to stores.
Claim 2 is probably true, and I'm not sure why they would doubt that.
Claim 3 seems plausible.
Claim 4 is probably true. Most games released to date, especially crossplatform titles, probably don't make good or efficient use of the SPUs.

I hope #4 isn't true! MGS4 is visually impressive no doubt, but it isn't mind-blowing by any means (at least nothing in the first 2 hours blew me away).

1.... Since April's NPD... WTF? THATS ALMOST THREE MONTHS OLD! 1 can def be true. (Especially since NPD said GTA's effecft would be in Mays. AND!!!!!! MGS4 was released last month)

2. How many of the games use the singstore? Im sure there are songs that get like 100,000 downloads alone.

 3. I can see that happening for sure. CoD4 map pack... Warhawk Expansions... More Demos... more games... more users....

4. And again Kojima quoted out of context...

claim 2 could be true. If singstar only shipped 500k then everyone on average would d/l less than 4 songs to make up that figure.

Around the Network

I've got Singstar PS3 and though I'm very disappointed in the game's music choice overall, I've downloaded 6 or 7 songs trying to find something good. I think that number is totally realistic or perhaps even low. On the singstar forums, there are many people that have downloaded dozens of songs...

How about yesterday's E3 claim that they were on track to sell 5 billion PS3s?
