E3 has a long reputation amongst developers, publishers, media and gamers alike of being loud and in your face. What we've seen happening recently is this mere shell of the E3 that the world has come to know and love. Presenters complained about the beer, booth babes, noise, bright flashing lights, just about anything they possibly COULD complain about.
So, E3 was scrubbed down to be this nice little clean, obedient pet instead of the wild creature it once was. Is it better? The answer there is clear. Much lower attendance, less investors, more developers and publishers deciding it wasn't worth going to E3. Long story short, E3 is dying at the hands of the very people who hold its reins.
Let's put this into perspective. Picture throwing a huge keg party at your house every weekend for years. Tons of people show up, ready to party and have a good time. Then suddenly, you decide to stop serving alcohol and turn it into a tea party, all prim and proper. That rowdy crowd won't come back to your parties, and you'll have a lower turnout more and more often, because your party is as dull as pre-calculus. This is what is happening to E3 now. Sure, you can argue, that there is the E for All event now, which allows for a more public presentation, but it is new and doesn't hold the prestige that the name "E3" holds. Plus its so late in the year that it affects people's finances with the holidays so close-by.
No matter which way you spin the 3 major companies' presentations, this E3 has been as boring as a movie marathon of "Ernest Goes To...." film. It's sort of like a balding man.... a few hairs go at first, and then more, and then you're bald. It won't take very long for E3 to lose all of its hair unless it does something seriously different than what it is.
