Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo has turn its back on core gamers

A couple of things to consider

1. Fatal Frame is Tecmo and it (Tecmo) is having its own troubles right now. If you notice, the list of upcoming Wii games for the rest of the year in NA does not even have a Tecmo entry, even though it was to show Spray at E3. (And Tecmo Bowl was supposed to have a Wii counterpart that I wanted to get).

2. Nintendo is doing better listening to a broad base of gamers than the "hardcore" gamers. It has released four games since last holiday season that have sold 5M globally -- Mario Kart Wii, SMG, SSBB, Wii Fit. That is as many games that have sold so highly as the Xbox 360 (four) and the PS3 (zero) have combined for their entire lifetimes (32 and 20 months respectively).

3. Nintendo wants the third parties to take some initiative -- just as they (the third parties) did on the DS. To do that, Nintendo has to be slow in releasing its own stuff. It does not want to create a GC situation (where there are virtually no third-party titles), especially when it takes extra effort to bring out Wii games (because you have to use different middleware than for the HD consoles).

4. Nintendo sees the console as having a longer-than-previously-thought lifespan. If you watched the E3 presentation, Reggie Fils-Aime talked about how the DS was setting a new trend because it was still not peaking. The Wii is the same way. That means you have to hold more software in reserve.

5. I wonder what people want in "hardcore." I have seen people get hardcore about Animal Crossing for example.

I too would like to have seen more. Kirby Wii (if it ever comes out) is a day one purchase for me (for my soon to be 6 year old son if he starts to behave better). Still, if you look at the list of games to be released in the last half of the year, there are at least 20 games in which I am interested (not including titles that I might want to get for my above-mentioned son). These range from casual to harder stuff -- from Carnival Games MiniGolf and Game Party 2 to Call of Duty and Tales.

If you don't like what Nintendo is offering, there are two HD consoles from which to choose. Basically, if you are a male age 18-34, you are choosing one of those other two (PS3 or Xbox 360). But everyone else seems to be happy playing the Wii.

Remember, these companies exist to make money. And only one is making money.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
