This gives the actual details of the awards. It's basically just another B-grade movie awards, that focuses on hi-def. It's not something to get excited over, or to assume it hurts anyone who didn't attend.

Frankly something like this is part of the problem. Getting into the mainstream is key. An award like this is just king of the molehill.

first there was the 1080i player----that was replaced with the 1080p players

movies were first put on single layers (30g) until that amount of space was unsufficient---now every HD-DVD comes on a dual layer just to make sure the film and suplimental materials fit. and now that thats not good enough to compete with BR they now see it fit to re-release a player that will do 1080p (what they should've been in the first place) and a higher storage compacity player (once again should've been in the first place)

HD-DVD has been out longer than BR and has nothing to show for it next to their competitor.

Time for them to throw in the towl and become part of the BR Association.

as far as sales go: of course HD discs don't outsell SD discs right now. they probably won't for some years. but to ignore the inevitability of change is stupidity. VHS once grossly outsold DVD but as time progressed so did the support of DVD.

Single layer means 15 GB in the case of HD DVD.
Please name some movies that were released on a single-layered HD DVD - afaik this never happened since the yield rates for dual layer HD DVDs were sufficient from the beginning. The opposite is the case for BR, where lots of movies had to be released on 25 GB (single-layered) BDs because of disastrous yield rates for dual layer BDs.

At the moment, BR has a slight advantage in terms of software support. Until Warner decides which path to take this doesn't mean anything though.

BR seems to have better support among hardware manufacturers, but the only BR player that is basically in use is the PS3. No big difference from Toshiba being the only HD DVD player provider.

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player sales jump on price cut

Sales for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 HD DVD Player jumped following a temporary price cut at Amazon.com on Tues.
Sales increased 489 percent on Wed. morning to rank as the No. 29 best-selling product in Amazon's Video Games division.

Amazon on Tues. discounted the peripheral by 28 percent to $129.99 from an MSRP of $179.99.

Retailer Toys R Us price cut the device online and at brick and mortar retail stores.

Microsoft in July price cut the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to $179 from $199. The peripheral allows Xbox 360 owners to view new HD DVD format discs from their console.

The current Xbox 360 HD DVD SKU includes a copy of King Kong on HD DVD, Media Remote, and a mail-in rebate for five free HD DVD discs.

Toshiba Corp.’s HD DVD format is at war with Sony Corp.’s Blu-ray disc format at retail. Both camps have held steep price cuts to lure consumers to their respective formats.

In Nov., Wal-Mart stores held an in-store promotion that sold HD DVD players for $99. Sony in Nov. debuted a new 40GB Playstation 3 SKU that includes Blu-ray disc functionality for $399.

The Blu-ray Disc Association this week said that 2.7 million players have been sold through to U.S. consumers. The HD DVD Promotions Group in Nov. said that 750,000 HD DVD players have been sold through to consumers.

DH4 (Blu) just edged out PE (HD) as the best selling title for the week. Overall volume of sales described as abysmal.
