Name the things in games that just plain drive you crazy!

1. No way to skip a cutscene.

I was ready to pull my hair out while stuck on a board in Red Steel and having been forced to rewatch the intro cutscene to the board 10 times. I'm like for the love of God is it that hard to program a button to skip this crap?

2. No Temp Save.

We can debate all day on when a game should let you save, but every game should have a temp save system. The ability to save where you are and force your game to shut down and when you start up delete the temp save. Meaning you couldn't use that file to cheat and replay a hard part, but you could use the feature if you need to stop playing and don't feel like starting the mission from scratch. Square had this feature in a number of handheld games I don't know why it's not used more often. And seriously how many of us how many times have left our gaming system on for hours just to avoid losing a part we started? Then they have the nerve to put in 30-40 minute game sequences where we can't save, sometimes you just can't play that long, I mean seriously what am I supposed to do?

3. No camera invert option.

Games that don't allow me to invert the camera system. I end up always changing it the last game I played that didn't allow me was FFXII and literaly every time i rotate the camera I turn it the wrong way and have to go back. Every game should allow inversion.

Okay no what are yours!!!!

1. MGS2 - My god, you could just hit the triangle button to skip the dialogue but without it I would personally do a Sam Fisher on Hideo Kojima.

2. This would be great, and has been a staple on PC games since forever, but the reason it's not a staple of console games has traditionally been due to technical limitations (although some games are starting to allow you to do so; hopefully this trend continues).

3. Ditto that for flying games. I hate it when flying games make you use "up" to go up and vice-versa. You don't fly that way in real life, why would you do so in a game? At least allow the option.

1)Unable to change control configuration
2)Like Entroper, bugs. I mean once when me and my brother were doin CO-OP on R:FOM, the tank that was supposed to land in front of us, bounced up (!!) and landed on the top of the building. We then got killed by a widowmaker, becuase we should have been in the tank, not in the open! It never happened again, but it's still annoying. Then again, PSN should mean they can release patches.
3)Saving only at certain points
4)Health, sometimes ammo pick-ups. It's not that I don't like them, they should be in all games, but I also tthink your health should slowly recharge aswell, as that makes the game easier if you get down to really low health.
5)Timing jumps etc. I don't mind timing jumps to a certain extent, but sometime they are just too hard (Prince of Persia)
6)Silly copyright. Meaning on some games, for instance, the cars may not be named by their actual names, and on other games, the football teams won't be names by thier proper names. Damn EA, buying all the premiership copyrights!
7)Sequels that don't present a new storyline, or not much extra. Not so bad on things like driving games, but Mario...

Er... back in the SNES games I guess. The last 3 Mario Games:

Super Mario 64: the classic Mario plot, in 3D

Super Mario Sunshine: The entire game revolved around cleaning up sludge with a water pack, weird, but unique.

Super Mario Galaxy: Er... we don't actually know, but it's in space. How much can it be like the other 2?

Back on topic:

1. Can't skip a cutscene. I often replay games, and if I can't skip the cutscene I get pissed.

2. Randomly placed minigames that mean nothing to the actual game. Itsamii's example of FFVII is what I'm thinking of on this one as well.

3. Bugs, especially game breaking ones. Developers shouldn't be lazy, they shouldn't release a game till it's complete.

4. Bad voice acting. This is the biggest one... horrible voice acting will completely destroy a game for me.

5. Recharging health bars. these are dumb, then you can just sit in a corner when you suck at a game and wait for your health to go back up after every fight.

6. Button cycle battles, (ala God of War). I hate these events. They completely destroy the challenge of the games, and just look pretty.

7. Any game that's too easy in general.

8. Load times.

I'll reinforce load times. Was I spoiled by starting with catridges that don't make me wait 2 minutes for a level? Do you think we like staring at those screens? The Ps3 loads portions games into a hard drive (7 minutes for Virtua Fighter), yet still has astonishing load times. Of course, if that install isn't for speed, or is actually helping speed apparently, it still leads to:

Incomplete games. In 1998, PA made a joke comic about a game you bought but had no CD and had to wait for the patch to play. Now this is becoming the norm? That was part of the appeal of console games, you buy it, it works perfectly. If there are bugs, they recall, it costs them a lot, so they test the hell out of it. I also dislike downloaded content for a game (Map packs etc) unless the game itself is downloaded, but that to me really seems like they just shipped an incomplete game again and just wanted more money. Even free, it bothers me.

RPGS - No auto battle. Face it, some times, all you're going to do is mash X. So allow R1 to fast forward. And if they die from it, it's their fault for not recognizing a harder battle. (Some games do it, some don't. Digital Devil Saga did, and if you fast forward at the wrong time, you will die)

Bad Voice Acting - Okay, so long as you can turn it off/turn on subtitles/not make us hit our mute button.

See Ya George.

"He did not die - He passed Away"

At least following a comedians own jokes makes his death easier.

the screens that you see a gazillion times when you boot up your console +/- game.
warning this, warning that. I got all that the first time. stop telling me over and over again.
and you can even skip those screens.
some games have multiple of those "intro" screens that you cannot skip.
that whole 2 minutes before you hit the "press start" screen... they can add up. Especially annoying when you have time just to play for 10-15 mins.

and i'll stop whining here before i smear over to all those screens in movies :)

-Long intros/loading. I don't need to see leaves blowing and water dropping every time I turn it on before the 16 companies that made the game. Several Wii games put all the developers on one screen, and then a quick flash of Nintendo and the publisher.
-Lack of Save points in a game that should have them. RPG's and Adventure games should have a savepoint every 10-15 minutes. Action games should have them before the hard parts. But really why can't I save anytime, this is the GD 21st century.
-Unbalanced multiplayer.
-Poor difficulty gauge, It's seems some game companies play test with monkeys and other hire MLGamers.
-We are about 7 years past useless puzzles. Puzzles should fit into the game.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I was thinking these are things that need to change. And if I get enough support, I'd like to make an online petition and send it to all publishers. We could get it digged or whatever and get some credit for VGchartz then maybe if we get enough signatures some of the gaming sites will do a story on it, and perhaps we'll get a few thousand signatures, at which point, maybe, just maybe something in this industry will change, and we can say we were apart of that!! Who thinks this is a good idea?

Keep submitting your complaints and remember now I'll start to keep track of them and maybe I'll start a new thread with the list to tweak before putting up the petition.

Remember these points when posting ideas:
   1. Keep it universal, try to avoid things that are to specific to genre or franchise.
   2. Make them affordable ideas. Like the skip the cutscene option is clearly affordable by any publishers     standards. So despite hating bad voice acting, I'd leave that out. Reviewers complain about this too, and most likely they know it's bad but don't have the budget for something better. So keep it affordable and doable.

Okay keep it rolling!!!!

@naznatips, they do seem different, but it's still seems to be the same characters, and similar kind of things, and although they are different, with the exclusion of Wii controls, they don't really bring any large changes to the previous versions. They must have rescued the princess by now! However, another thing with Mario, that is the thing that really annoys me, and this could be applied to other games aswell probably:
1)Using the same character in loads of different types of games, this hardly adds to the characters development (actually, does anyone know anything much about Maio, apart from he's Italian and a plumber?), and makes the development department seem lazy. Why do you never see Master Chief in a racing games, because it'd be stupid, why do you never see Ratchet in a Sims game, because it'd be stupid, I could go on and on... Same with Pokemon aswell, I really loved the RPG style games, but what was with the Pinball versions? I know Super Smash Bros is this, but that is designed to be like that. If I wanted a racing game, I want one designed from the ground up, not Mario as a some cameo.

Do we want to know more about the character Mario? The reason why he has been in so many other games and got tons of spinoffs is because he is so popular (and of course that's because these other games are of high quality too) and many gamers like him (or at least other characters from the Mario universe). Mario is the most popular videogame character ever.

Sega has Sonic who also featured in more than just platformers after he became popular.

Sony tried to the same with Crash (Team Racing), although that wasn't nearly as successful as the Nintendo and Sega attempts.

Microsoft is trying to do the same. There's the RTS spinoff Halo Wars, Master Chief was playable in DoA 4.

Oh, and Mario Kart is racing game designed from the ground up and also happens to be one of the most popular and successful franchises in the world.

Other people may have done it, but it still annoys me that companies can't be bothered to do anything new, and so make money of something that is already established.

So why'd they not create a new driving game...

Nintendo isn't in the business of making simulators (think ultra realistic racing games, shooters, whatever) , but instead the business of making games. Nintendo has put out way more fanciful games then realistic games (although I'm sure there are a couple). With the success of Mario Kart why would they spend time making a different type of racing game when other 3rd parties can take care of that. Instead they can create other games like Tennis, Golf, Soccer, and other totally new IP with the 3rd parties filling in the gaps that they leave, like the more realistic games.

Mario is in everything because people love Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, DK, Bowser etc... so why not give people the characters they love in various games they like to play. It doesn't matter what game we play, if Yoshi is in it, that is the character my wife chooses, and on top of that she'll be more likely to play too. I've never bought a realistic tennis game, but I've bought Mario Tennis for the GC and the thing i like best about it is the special moves with the Mario characters, not how realistic it is. Why make a fanciful tennis game without Mario and company? For example, how many people would buy "Some new character kart!!!" over "Mario Kart"?

Back on topic, I only have 2 complaints.
1) make it possible to skip cut-scenes
2) make it possible to remap buttons on more complex games, so FPS or fighter games should support re-maping.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit
