@naznatips, they do seem different, but it's still seems to be the same characters, and similar kind of things, and although they are different, with the exclusion of Wii controls, they don't really bring any large changes to the previous versions. They must have rescued the princess by now! However, another thing with Mario, that is the thing that really annoys me, and this could be applied to other games aswell probably:
1)Using the same character in loads of different types of games, this hardly adds to the characters development (actually, does anyone know anything much about Maio, apart from he's Italian and a plumber?), and makes the development department seem lazy. Why do you never see Master Chief in a racing games, because it'd be stupid, why do you never see Ratchet in a Sims game, because it'd be stupid, I could go on and on... Same with Pokemon aswell, I really loved the RPG style games, but what was with the Pinball versions? I know Super Smash Bros is this, but that is designed to be like that. If I wanted a racing game, I want one designed from the ground up, not Mario as a some cameo.

Do we want to know more about the character Mario? The reason why he has been in so many other games and got tons of spinoffs is because he is so popular (and of course that's because these other games are of high quality too) and many gamers like him (or at least other characters from the Mario universe). Mario is the most popular videogame character ever.

Sega has Sonic who also featured in more than just platformers after he became popular.

Sony tried to the same with Crash (Team Racing), although that wasn't nearly as successful as the Nintendo and Sega attempts.

Microsoft is trying to do the same. There's the RTS spinoff Halo Wars, Master Chief was playable in DoA 4.

Oh, and Mario Kart is racing game designed from the ground up and also happens to be one of the most popular and successful franchises in the world.

Other people may have done it, but it still annoys me that companies can't be bothered to do anything new, and so make money of something that is already established.
