I see several positive effects for the format war, including:

1. Lower prices on next-gen media. Capitalism has at its core principles, a beleif that competition is good. In this case, competition will force down the price of the next-gen DVD players, to affordable levels. Now, keep in mind that at the begining of the betamax vs VHS war, the tape players were $1000. So, prices will come down.

2. Adoption of "better" more graphics intensive games and movies. You need more storage for better graphics. This one shouild be more obvious. So, not only will we have better resolution with games and movies, but greater AI and processing, b/c greater amounts of storage gives us the room to do these kinds of things.
