Never, remember there's always kids growing up and starting playing videogames, so they'll play FPS games of the time they are teenagers

That is one of the exceptions
FPS's really benefit from jumps in new technology too, more so than many other genres, because they often demand complex physics as well as beautiful visuals.
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke
It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...." Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
Also from a gameplay perspective shooting weapons at stuff is one of the most interesting ACTIONS to CONTROL. Imagine gameplay that has you tie your shoes or press left and up on a d-pad to do morning stretches and eat breakfast with your family. (My Summer Vacation 3 on PS3 - I guess the Japanese like it though) Not exactly edge of your seat actions.
Let's face it the FPS genre is here to stay. Shooting stuff is just too much fun and with improved graphics and especially physics and 100% level destruction that stays it will keep getting better. I also think more games will adopt the do everything approach combining different genres into one game FPS, RPG, Platform, Fighter, RTS 1st & 3rd person view, etc.
Maybe a game where someone controls enemies in group formations on an overhead map RTS control and the other players have to blast those enemies in an FPS view. Games will continue to let you choose which view you prefer to move and shoot in like in MGS4, and give you more solutions on how to clear a level by blowing a hole through the wall like in Red Faction. One action/adventure game in the past called Omikron for PC tried to combine open world with RPG elements and a Fighting and Shooting engine. It proved too ambitious for its time and ended up doing everything mediocre. But I bet we'll see a game one day that will have an engine to do everything amazing.
No doubt about it that FPS genre have helped push the graphics and physics technology forward. I look forward to seeing what games will become in the next 5-25 years. This generation motion controls have added a whole new gaming element as well and next year it looks like new 3D glasses games like Avatar are pushing gaming tech further.
It won't die down any time soon, and it'll never die out, because it is probably the most immersive of video game experiences i.e CoD4 and people enjoy that. Mirror's Edge may change that, but unless it is a massive success and many developer's start copying it, FPS will still be the primary source for the most immersive experience (if only because you play in the first person perspective of someone inside that game world).
As for the people that say "I was bored of it X years ago", you guys/gals are just the same as the losers that now hate punk or metal just because a few posers (simple plan and co) come out and popularise the genre because "I was into it before it was cool". Get over yourselves and enjoy the games.
I'm sure a lot of people are getting bored. You'll just like it when you miss it. Pwning people the same way all over again is boring. I'm into RPGs right now.
I think FPS already topped. TPS and SCS are the new trend especially the cover system gives the gamer more than just shooting. The action/adventure genre will be the most popular in the end. It's all about blending gameplay and waiting untill systems are strong enough to process it.
GTA isn't perfect, but it makes sense because of the huge world.
It took the industry about 10 years to get over the platform rage, so I wouldn't hold my breath.
