Also from a gameplay perspective shooting weapons at stuff is one of the most interesting ACTIONS to CONTROL. Imagine gameplay that has you tie your shoes or press left and up on a d-pad to do morning stretches and eat breakfast with your family. (My Summer Vacation 3 on PS3 - I guess the Japanese like it though) Not exactly edge of your seat actions.

Let's face it the FPS genre is here to stay. Shooting stuff is just too much fun and with improved graphics and especially physics and 100% level destruction that stays it will keep getting better. I also think more games will adopt the do everything approach combining different genres into one game FPS, RPG, Platform, Fighter, RTS 1st & 3rd person view, etc.

Maybe a game where someone controls enemies in group formations on an overhead map RTS control and the other players have to blast those enemies in an FPS view. Games will continue to let you choose which view you prefer to move and shoot in like in MGS4, and give you more solutions on how to clear a level by blowing a hole through the wall like in Red Faction. One action/adventure game in the past called Omikron for PC tried to combine open world with RPG elements and a Fighting and Shooting engine. It proved too ambitious for its time and ended up doing everything mediocre. But I bet we'll see a game one day that will have an engine to do everything amazing.

No doubt about it that FPS genre have helped push the graphics and physics technology forward. I look forward to seeing what games will become in the next 5-25 years. This generation motion controls have added a whole new gaming element as well and next year it looks like new 3D glasses games like Avatar are pushing gaming tech further.
