@Skyrender, Soma, and Grampy: Yes, I agree that Wii's appeal is more than just what I mentioned. For the sake of space, I wanted to limit it to trying to explain why the numbers are so huge by focussing on the biggest constituencies. My gut feeling is the original and returning Nintendo fans are the largest group right now. That will change, however, as more young people come into the mix. Just how many, no one knows, even Nintendo was surprised by the demand, hence the shortages. Even in a bad economy they can't keep enough on the shelves of what is, essentially, a luxury item.
