Forums - Nintendo - My theory behind the Wii's success

Good read, but I think you miss the new gamers, people who never played videogames before. Not children, but young/adult/old people who was never interested in gaming.

Oh jeez....I really don't know why it went 'wall-of-text'. I'm sorry. Ihad spaces in th original. Does anyone who this has happened to before know how I can fix it? I'm really sorry. WTH..it won't put in my spaces and lin breaks.

It sometimes just does that.  If you edit it and respace it will come out fine.

You've nailed one of the oft-missed demographics, to be certain. Though the Wii has a much, much wider demographic appeal than that. About the only groups that it does not appeal to at all are the severely bleeding-edge technophiles who refuse to touch any hardware that's outdated by more than 2 or 3 years, and the anti-gaming sorts who refuse to give gaming any chance at all.

Wow I'm glad somebody finally nailed it. I've been pondering this myself lately and the theory makes perfect sense.

Remember your history or you are doomed to repeat it.

Good theory and I think that is definitely part of the success of the wii along with getting new people to play console games.

Bingo! I've been trying to get people to recognize the 2nd time around gamer - like myself. I've had a game system of some sort since Pong, most recently the PC. With age I find I have less time, slower reflexes, and the patience to deal with the dual analog controller. I was never particularly fond of them and now they just frustrate me.

I strictly play for fun and relaxation now so frankly I have no interest in any game that requires tutorials and instructions with a bunch of arrows pointing to a bunch of buttons.

I had decided to just hang it up and quit gaming. But then I saw the Wii - bowling by swinging your arm, tennis by playing tennis - Kart racing by using a steering wheel. Go figure! games you play by moving like you would in real life, intuitive, games where you're playing immediately rather than wading through tutorials.

It was love at first sight. I just wonder why no one thought of it a long time ago. So Nintendo didn't steal a potential customer from MS or Sony. I wasn't interested in them at any price, even free in a cereal box.

And surprise Microsoft, I have no desire to "graduate" to your system, not now, not ever. At this point in my life I'm going to be a Wii gamer or an ex-gamer.

Actually, Grampy, somebody did try intuitive controls in an experimental form for their console, about 20 years ago. That's right, Nintendo. The Power Glove and the Power Pad were the original experiments to see if gaming could be made to mirror reality in experience instead of abstract it. Their failure to elicit much impact certainly didn't encourage Nintendo (or anybody else at the time) to think that this sort of thing could take off.
