That's bad ass. One thing I truly hate is slow porn.

How is it "easily achievable in the next 5 years" at least outside of major population centers, when it requires fiberoptic connected homes for this technology to work? Large countries with low population densities such as Canada, Australia, Russia and presumably even the United States will probably never see widespread deployment of fiberoptic networks in their rural to suburban communities.

Ever hear of Verizon FIOS? Currently available in every major US city, and MANY suburbs, expanding on a monthly basis. Easily will reach through most of the non-rural parts of the US within 5 years, and possibly even them too. FIOS is complete fiberoptic service. If not anywhere else, at least the US will have this service readily available within 5 years. I would expect Japan to be up to par as well. I'm not sure on the UK, I do know Ireland for as rural as it can be, has become a major center for technology. As it is only a 4 to 5 hour trip from Galway to Dublin, I could see fiberoptics easily installed there in a short matter of time. Australia is another country where fiberoptics can easily be rolled out, as the bulk of the population is along the eastern seaboard.

Who is this Chip guy, and how is going to speed up my interwebs?

5 years!!!! Ugh!

5 years? But I want it now...

BT is supposed to be upgrading all phonelines in 2012, I hope that means we get fiberoptic (highly likely).

Fixed. This is our government we are talking about (Government is fuding BT's upgrade). Besides; BT is a monopoly operator in terms of owning phone lines; what incentive do they have to give us something raesonable? They'll do the minimum of upgrading to get the money and then stop.

Fiber optics are the way of the future. Streaming everything here we come.

Yeah, I know of Fios and here is where a map of where their service is (red), where they have revealed where they have plans to develop (yellow) and where they have no plans whatsoever (orange). And considering the resources it takes to deploy it would mean they would probably have to be planning it already to reach all of the continental US within 5 years. Will fiberoptics to the house happen in  years in all of the US? I doubt it.  Will it happen eventually? Probably.
