Ever hear of Verizon FIOS? Currently available in every major US city, and MANY suburbs, expanding on a monthly basis. Easily will reach through most of the non-rural parts of the US within 5 years, and possibly even them too. FIOS is complete fiberoptic service. If not anywhere else, at least the US will have this service readily available within 5 years. I would expect Japan to be up to par as well. I'm not sure on the UK, I do know Ireland for as rural as it can be, has become a major center for technology. As it is only a 4 to 5 hour trip from Galway to Dublin, I could see fiberoptics easily installed there in a short matter of time. Australia is another country where fiberoptics can easily be rolled out, as the bulk of the population is along the eastern seaboard.

Yeah, I know of Fios and here is where a map of where their service is (red), where they have revealed where they have plans to develop (yellow) and where they have no plans whatsoever (orange). And considering the resources it takes to deploy it would mean they would probably have to be planning it already to reach all of the continental US within 5 years. Will fiberoptics to the house happen in  years in all of the US? I doubt it.  Will it happen eventually? Probably.
