Forums - Gaming - If it´s true MS and Sony will start being more "Wii like", what effects...

...could this have on the 360 and PS3 current userbases?

By "Wii like", I mean supposing MS and Sony reveal their own "Wiimotes and Miis" and make more agressive moves toward the so called 'casual' games at E3 or later (but still in this generation).

With the Wii´s surprising success, outselling both HD systems combined month after month, top executives at MS and Sony may feel it´s necessary to be more "like the Wii"....not to mention, there are already several rumors about MS showing their 'Wii approach' at this year´s E3.

Also, there are the rumors about Sony´s own "Wii remote" (not the Sixaxis controller) which apparently "transforms" (you might have heard about that one).

All in all, it´s possible, and likely I´d say, MS and Sony will start their "Wii route", at least to some degree, by the end of this year or next year....but, do you see any effects on the current userbase of the HD systems?...some?....no effect at all?...Will many of the current 360 and PS3 fans(boys) complain?

When something big like this happens people will always complain.

It'll be fun to see what happens with MS and Sony.

I can't really see a move in that direction helping Microsoft or Sony (or hurting Nintendo) at this point in the generation, and yet I can see how it would hurt Microsoft and Sony ...

From a consumer's stand point: Microsoft and Sony have spent the past couple of years directly and indirectly making very negative statments about the Wii and "Casual" gamers in general. This has (to a certain extent) helped them grow their support from "Core" gamers who feel alienated by the success of the Wii. If Microsoft and Sony choose to follow the Wii's approach mid-generation they could alienate the consumers who are buying their consoles, while at the same time not gaining any consumers in return (in part because an expensive system combined with an expensive and poorly supported add-on will not be attractive to "Casual" gamers).

From a third party developer's standpoint: For Microsoft and Sony to have any chance of being successful they will have to convince many third party developers to produce HD games that are designed to take full advantage of their new interfaces. Even a very simple HD game can be very expensive to develop, and these games will likely sell poorly because they require an expensive add on to play. If developers lose money developing HD games for a failed add-on this will hurt their relationship with Microsoft.

If that won't be taking good games away from me, it is all the same. Of course those avatars and stuff won't be mandatory.. i hope. :D X-mote would be a decent addition for games like halo wars and hopefully other upcoming rts-titles.

Well if it is the only way to play games, then I will probably play PC games a lot more.

Some people will be pissed and like always everyone will blame Nintendo (and Wii Fit). The real fanboys, on the other hand, will embrace it and tell us there is no need to have a Wii anymore. I expect a 50 paragraph review from Dodece or Starcraft how much more precise, intuitive and next gen the X-mote is.

If the prices of the HD consoles are cut, they could well be a serious competition to the Wii.

Even though I don't expect a price reduction of the Wii in the near future, I also don't expect the Wii to remain at $250 for that much longer. With their pricing strategy so far, I would expect the XBox 360 or PS3 to be (at best) $299 with a $50 Wiimote (without a game) vs. a $199 Wii with Wiimote and game ...
