I've seen quite a few people wonder how much Wii Ware has sold compared to Xbox Live, how much PSN has sold, etc etc.
So I decided to make a thread with the numbers (even though I don't have all), and discuss them.
Well, anyway, the numbers I've found.
Xbox Live Arcade:
Total of top 100, as of end of May '08. 19.298M games sold, or simply roughly 20M Source: http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=1209
Virtual console:
(Rough) Estimation by DKIII using Nintendo channel data. More info in Source, which really should be read. Data is North America only, and sits at 8075K for the top 45 titles. http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=1355
A fair assumption would be that 50-60% of the VC sales are in North America, meaning that the total number of games sold should be within 16M to 18M. Of course, as earlier mentioned, it is an estimate, and thus not (neccesarily) very precise.
Playstation Network:
The 3rd best-selling game on the PSN (at GDC times) was Tekken 5, dark ressurection. At GDC it was also mentioned that Tekken 5 (PSN) had sold 107K in NA. If we assume that NA stands for roughly 50% of Ps3s downloads, we get 210K for WW. The Ps3 has around 60 games released that has sold 50K (in NA), or 100K WW. This means that we can assume a roughly 9M of total sales. http://vgchartz.com/forum/newthread.php?board=2
All the above is only games, and not only downloads, as most of those are free.
