If you really look at Nintendo's approach to online with the Wii, you'll really see the laziness in it all. They do so many things great, but this they seem to just stumble and fall at this. There was no online multiplayer for over 8 months, until Mario Strikers Charged first implemented it. The whole things just wasn't ready. Midway wanted to have it in Mortal Kombat Armageddon and many other third parties propheced to wanting to implement it, but Nintendo didn't have it up and ready. Online gaming. 8 months from launch. 2007. If that doesn't show laziness, nothing will.
Wiiware not even being thought of until way past the launch was another oversight. Nintendo should have seen the success Microsoft was having and jumped in.
The storage problem was obvious to anyone with common sense since day one. With so many VC titles to choose from, a minority of gamers were going to be hassled into finding workarounds because they can't hold all of their downloads. I actually support people that mod their Wii's to throw emulators on it, because at least the hackers are doing something to help the Wii owners faced with this problem.
The Friend Code system is archaic, and having 16 numbers plus an additional 12 for every game doesn't keep children any safer than a Gamertag or PSN ID. It's just more of a hassle. I really hope Nintendo doesn't have the audacity to come out with Pay-To-Play before they fix the Friend Codes and add voice chat to games.
This isn't to say it wasn't a good move business wise. Nintendo did something right to sell Wiis this fast, but those that want even passable online experiences aren't being catered to in this "Blue Ocean" strategy, because "Blue Ocean" caters to the majority, most of whom happen to be morons. They're lucky they can find where to plug the wires in to get the damn thing started, let alone concern themselves with figuring out how to go online with a game.
