Forums - Gaming - Why is a Hard game "hardcore"?

I consider "hardcore games" to be the ones that can be easily used for competition... That's why most FPS games are classified as hardcore games.. Also RPG's because of the depth of them... Difficulty has very little to do with the title "hardcore" it's basically any game that the "I just want to smile and laugh" player would not play to the full extent of the experience.

RPGs arent competitive though.

Hmm I kinda agree with you. I know alot of people who smile laugh and get excited and play the games you talk about. They do it for fun.

A hardcore fan of anything
Likes it more...
Knows more about the subject (or is better at the activity, if it applies...
Doesn't need coddling...
is involved in the activity (watching the games, shows, playing vgs) and in activities related to the activity...

... than a normal person.

I think you could make your definition a little more accurate and concise by simply saying that a hardcore gamer is one for whom gaming is much more important than average.  Lots of gamers you may consider hardcore that I know care about silly things like their gamer score, which I'd consider a casual thing.

or you could say that for a hardcore gamer gaming is a sport where the higher the difficulty gets the better challenge it is for you to win over that game or that special part of the game that required you to get into hardcore mode just to pass it.

OP: Fun playing games is for when you just want to hae fun playing games, hardcore is when you want to beat something or someone and any cost and put the effort to do so which will be repaid to you in satisfaction when you beat the game/boss/level.

You put effort in playing fun games too. You cant beat a Zelda game or an RPG without putting in effort. You dont really have to put in effort in fighters but they would be consider hardcore too rigtht?

easy games aren't fun to hardcore gamers

but why wouldnt a game of average difficulty be considered hardcore?

Well, most RPG's are very easy, in the way that you'll seldom die, still the story and the depth/sidequests/lenght make it worthwhile.
FPS's are also pretty easy most of the times, but it's the involvement, tactical possibilities and mayhem that makes it also very good for the hardcore.

But hard games like Ninja Gaiden, Old NES games, Metroid, etc are of course very suited for hardcore because it will involve lots of restarts and slow progress.

Completly agree. I think a game should be considered "core" by the depth of the game not by the difficulty.

Not sure if thats what you were trying to say but its just hit me....^^;

Some people like having challenges and play on Hard Mode or whatever thats FINE. But dont say that a normal game isnt hardcore because its not making you throw your remote at the TV, restart a level, or piss you off.

I can agree with that.

While beating (unfairly) hard games can be - and mostly is - rewarding, you don't always want to go through the hassle of playing a two-hour scenario over and over again because of a split-second mistake. This crutch in video game design originally came from the arcades, persisted thru the nineties and is still present in gaming - partially because it's really easy to extend playtime just by making a ridiculously hard game, and partially because some people are twisted enough to actually prefer games like that (myself included, to an extent).

There are plenty of games that are considered "hardcore" and can be beaten by anyone without too much trouble. Some of the notable examples include the first Metal Gear Solid, Bioshock all Final Fantasy games after 5. I'm also tempted to include every shooter made in the last five years, but I haven't really played them all that much so I won't.

Enough with the rambling. I'm trying to say that a hard game is most likely a gamer's game, but a high difficulty isn't a prerequisite for a "hardcore" game.

Agreed.

First off games are meant to be, above all else, FUN. Youre supposed to play em because you have fun with them smile, laugh whatever the hell you do when youre having fun.

Why games should be fun or make you smile? I don't get that, do you watch only comedies and cartoons too?

First off you fucking fanboy I say "whatever the hell you do when youre having fun" you dont have to smile.

Second you said "Why games should be fun" are you fucking stupid!? Why the hell do you play a game then?

The majority of people who play games play them because theyre fun if you can give me a better reason why people play game than tell me. And I doubt you can so if YOU play games for any other reason you are damn sad.

Haha. Stop your useless whining, wiikid. :( For you it is propably too hard to understand anything else than bright colors and oh so funny "its mii, maarrioo" voice acting. Well whatever, I should not even bother replying you but:

I play games that are competitive (online or lan/shared screen). That is not always fun, if you are losing. But when you win you will get a really good feeling. :D Some single player games are very hard and again, it is not really fun to play them. Beating a game which you thought you would never beat, that is sweet. Rewarding.

Why should I care why the majority plays games?

I looked up on wiktionary and dictionary.com and found the same three definitons for "hardcore".

1. having an extreme dedication to a certain activity(wiktionary)/unswervingly committed; uncompromising; dedicated(dictionary.com)

Gaming Translation: This has nothing to do with games themselves. This has to do with the gamer and their dedication to the game's they play. Under this definition, all games can be hardcore, and the play is the determining factor.

2. Resistant to change(wiktionary)/being so without apparent change or remedy; chronic(dictionary.com)

Gaming Translation: Basically this means games that stay stubbonly the same even with technical advances in hardware. I suppose that would make Mega Man the most hardcore series out of the bunch and the entire SHMUPS genre. I'd never thought of this, but I like this definition of a hardcore game.

3. Obscene or explicit(wiktionary)/pruriently explicit; graphically depicted(dictionary.com)

Gaming Translation: This is the one everyone hates the most, but it's actually true. Sex and violence in games falls under hardcore. GTA, Manhunt, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Resident Evil, Fallout, Leisure Suit Larry, God of War, etc. would all fall under this category.

So there you go. Even though I thought it would, difficult games do not fall under the term hardcore. Then again neither do "fun" games either. Those are your definitions, now live with them and bask in defeat because those idiots screaming "GTA is bloody and has sex so it's hardcore" were actually right for once.
