Forums - Sales - Madden 08 sales

Madden 08 on the PS3 last charted on the week ending may 3rd.  The lowest selling game in the top 200 is 4.4k, so it must be lower than that.  The Wii version sold 9.7k this last week, and has been selling steadily.  It sold more this week then it did in week 7, 8, 9, and 10.

i'm going to ignore the 20k in others for the ps3 version because we don't have any info for the wii version in others.

The PS3 version has sold 830k in NA

The Wii version is currently at 740k in NA.

The wii version is outselling the PS3 version by at least 5k per week (all we know is ps3 version sales are below 4.4k).  At that rate it would take 18 weeks or the week ending november 1st.

Could it seriously be possible that the Wii version outsells the PS3 version?  I am absolutely shocked that this would even become a possibility.   I would have said you were crazy if you told me this last year and I was one of those guys that had predicted that the Wii version would outsell it.

Wii games generally have much longer legs, in part because of how much higher weekly sales are ... If you make the assumption that 3 months after the release of a game like Madden the same percentage of new console owners (regardless of the console) will be looking for a copy of the game, then the system with the highest sales will (obviously) see higher sales of the game.

It really doesn't surprise me to see the Wii versions of Madden Sales catch up to the PS3 version, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Wii version of Madden 09 to (over time) approach the XBox 360's version ..

sure it's easy to say that now, but would you have said that last september?

Madden 08 sucked on the PS3. That's all the answer you need to know. Happily 09 is looking very very good as is NCAA 09

I find it sort of suspicious. Before this, PS3 sales of Madden were hovering at around 6k, now that halved. Yet Wii sales haven't changed at all. Hell, Wii sales are much higher than even 360 sales for the game.

It seems like all versions' weekly sales have vastly dropped except the Wii version.

Why do you find it suspicous?  Most game sales come from new consoles.  The Wii constantly sells 200-250% of the combined PS3 and Xbox360 totals.  It's the whole what is more important argument, tie ratio or installbase.  The Wii is starting to get to the point that even though Madden may not be its target audience, it can still sell quite a bit.

Yeah, maybe the Wii version outsells the PS3 version in weekly sales, but lifetime sales, the PS3 has the edge because Madden may not be the Wii's target audience and the whole install base on the Wii in America doesn't matter.

Yes, except Madden NFL 09 launches in about a month. Even if the Wii version outsells the others, it doesn't make sense that it does it by such a large amount. The 360 version was selling about 15-20k a week, then drops to 5k. The PS3 version was selling about 6-7k a week, drops to 3k. The Wii version was selling about 10k a week, still there. If all of them are seeing a sudden drop, why not the Wii? You could claim that the weekly sales are higher, but then it would have sold much better when it was outselling the 360 week after week.

That actually makes even more sense.  The PS3 and Xbox 360 are the target markets for Madden.  So people would know 09 is coming out soon and do not want to purchase 08.  The Wii owners see a $29.99 game that is decent and pick it up not caring if Madden 09 is coming out soon or knowing what features would be worth grabbing 09 for.

Exactly. I think everyone here is surprised that the Wii version is outselling the others at this point, but all things considered, it's not that hard to believe. Many 360 and PS3 games are heavily front-loaded with their sales and not many non-Nintendo Wii games are. I remember when everyone was saying Madden on the Wii was a huge flop last years, but it's had the legs to end up surprising everyone. Although it's impressive the Wii version is showing better legs, it still has a long way to go to catch up to the 360 and PS2 versions.

Anyways, you hit the nail on the head. Most of the hardcore Madden fans play the game on the X Box and PS systems. So they scoop it up early, which leads to sales really disappearing when the new version comes up. Not that hard figure out.
