Forums - Gaming - Bought new HDTV. Any good?

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN19A451-19-Inch-720p-White/dp/B001415EXM

I got a deal and I couldn't pass it up but I want to know if this will do for my gaming needs (I have other uses if not)

The contrast ratio is a little low for my taste but it always seems to be a little lower on smaller screens. Other than that Samsung makes among the best LCD tv's you can buy. For my money they're every bit as good as a Sony or Sharp and less expensive.

Refresh rate is very important with video gaming and lcd tvs. If it is a relatively new model you do not have anything to worry about though. 19 inches very big though. I did not bother clicking the link, is it a widescreen?

I had the exact same one... and then found it was too small for my bedroom, so I sold it and got a Bravia 32 inch.

As for the TV itself, it's awesome, you won't regret it

Samsung HDTVs are pretty much the best, in my opinion. Sony TVs may have slightly better specs for the price, but the Samsungs are built like a rock, while a Sony will break if you breathe on it too hard.

Either way, I'm loving my 23" Samsung. It's perfect for a smallish apartment living room.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

That contrast ratio doesn't mean anything because it's dynamic.  It means that the actual contrast ratio is probably 600:1 or maybe 1000:1, and then the whole panel gets brighter or darker based on the scene.  So one scene cannot have a very bright and also a very dark section -- this means specular highlights, etc will be under exposed or blacks will be grey.

But that's common to LCDs. There are none with a very good native contrast ratio.  They're all dynamic.  If you want a good contrast ratio, you go away from LCD (except the very high end ones that have back panels that can brighten/darken in regions, but these have their own problems yet).

Thanks for the replies and thank you for not making me regret my purchase lol

Samsung makes awesome TVs, I love mine. Only thing that sucks about them is their sound, so buy some speakers.

After Sony, Samsung easily makes the best LCDs. And Sony's may be better, but you pay quite a premium for what little improvements there are.

You made an excellent choice, my friend.

I had the same TV as well. It was incredible, but the only problem with it was the sound. I would recommend some speakers. Congrats.
