I got my issue of NP today, and it has an interview with Yoshihisa Hashimoto, who is working as team leader on Sonic Unleashed. When NP asked about playable characters, Hashimoto said, "Literally speaking, Sonic is the only playable character. However, there are various characters in the game"
I take this to mean that you can only play as Sonic, but Sonic becomes "unleashed" and transforms into werewolves and such. Hopefully these transformations won't ruin the game. Also, in the interview, it is revealed that there will be no ultiplayer, and that the game is very fast and if you are skilled you can string together combos that make the game look sweet and increase Sonics speed. It sounds like they are trying to implement Sonic's 2D roots and NiGHT's combo system into the game.
